Case Study: EMD That Made Me $40,000

This shows EMD remain a powerful technique despite rumors to the contrary,..., that I have been hearing in the past ten years or so.

Not necessarily, if the keyword is a spelling error it's generally not going to have much competition for that exact keyphrase. PLUS, everything else was spot on in regards to content, setting up SILOS, clustering, link building etc. which for any medium to low competition keyword is going to produce results...

So it's obviously hard to pin-point it on the EMD itself, I don't think having the keyword in your name necessarily has any advantage. Google is smarter than that, they're looking at the entire site for relevance..

Not trying to shit on this parade, but the the whole 'EMD Case Study' thing is a bit misleading... it all comes down to matching user intent and creating high-quality content. The other thing that becomes tricky are anchor texts

If you search "online free movies" you're not getting low quality sites with exact or similar matched domains. Just do a bit of research on Search Engine Watch or Journal, it's all been discussed before!! Cheers.

Great journey, thanks for sharing. Of course I don`t know how busy you are, but if I were you I think I would not sell this. I have a feeling that would jump more and more as you know what you are doing. Congrats!
Thanks Bud, back then i was working with someone quite huge in our Industry for a very low sum.

I wanted to sell the website to get fund so I could start something of my own. What drove my decision was also due to the fact that I could see recession coming and how it would lower my multiple, plus Google updates. I do feel i could have sold it for a better multiple but now it's Gone. :)

Wishing you Success :)

what your anchor strategy? like how much exact match keyword, LSI, Partial, Generic ratio
since your's was emd how you built link?
Sure, Anchor strategy was quite simple.

We wanted to diversify the anchor over related terms. Exact Anchor(60%), Read Here, Naked Anchor, Read More, Here, Know More, etc(These were sprinkled across)

Links were built over forums, guestposts, some web 2.0s(GSA on tier 2), tumblr, etc

Great share!
The only point I cannot follow why do you sell at Roi 14?
I am pretty sure the price could be 50k.
Anyway congrats!
It was my first site. In my head, i knew that I will be always be emotionally attached to it and not look at it as a business.

However, i did see the recession around and how being an EMD, most people don't want to pay huge sums when they could buy a more diversified asset that also reduces the risk. I had given a lot of thought and was happy with what the site had given to me for an year. I put that sum into something really interesting which i will soon share as a case study. It's Fine :)

Love this write-up. So much creativity and innovation. A lot of experimentation and pushing through. Congrats!!!

Exactly Sir, EMD have had a bad name just due to the fact that they are spoiled badly to be at the top. However if you become a Google Algo then you will notice, for them its just another site and if you have good content and good votes(Links), there's no harm in rewarding you as far as you are satisfying the user's intent

Really nice, congratulations and keep going! Now you have the cash flow to build more than 5 websites at once.
Thanks, Yes I do. All are on full throttle. Will be sharing some really cool stuff soon.

I have some understanding about the niche you worked. How did you find the buyers for it? Buyer is another IMer or a brand that want more visibility?
Buyer is another IM with a huge network so he could really leverage my site and dominate that whole niche

This really gives light to content is king concept..
Really this was a great journey.

Why did you feel to sell it now?
Is it because some new changes or you didn't see future promising with this?
I sold it because I felt, it had gotten enough and wanted to invest the cash into some thing that was picking up back then. Few other things that fueled my decision were the upcoming recession which I know would drop ad-rates and eventually my multiple :)

This is a really interesting case study. Your domain already have enough authority to sustain in the long run. You should've demanded more money for it. But, now you have enough money to apply same techniques to grow many more sites.
Yes Sir, However I sold it considering the recession period which would drop the ad rates and also my multiple. Also with EMD, not many want to take the risk of putting their money when they have a chance to push that money into a more diversified website. But again, as you said, now i have money to invest in other websites :)

This is really a great Case Study on EMD. It's great to read. I was wondering how did you manage anchor text variations for link building as it is EMD. Just Curious!!! :)

Thanks!
In the head, we treated it as any other website. The anchors were naturally diversified as in 60% as exact anchor, rest were LSI, Partial terms, Read More, Check Out, etc

That's as comprehensive as it gets! Fantastic share, very insightful.

The typo aside, putting out great quality content, and playing the long game when it comes to SEO is a great way to go about it!
I totally agree. i have something very soon coming up as a case study where like you said, Content is the king, there's always room for making it big.
