It's no Noob question but an interesting one.
Having a KW of 20 doesn't really matter except you take a deeper look of what the websites ranking on SERP looks like. We have criteria set aside in selecting keywords before adding them to store. Few are;
On Page Optimization: A quick look on SERP to see if websites ranking for our potential targeted Keyword are well optimized ( OnPage Wise) if 60-70% of the websites are well optimized, We most like wouldn't further research.
Contents On SERP: If the contents of the TOP 5 pages are more than 2000 words, We most likely wouldn't go further doing research as this wouldn't fall into our easy to rank type keywords.
Backlinks: Are the Top websites having authority backlinks? PBNs? We dig deep to further research and make valid assertion from data before having them enlist.
Page Domain Authority: In as much the DA on a website influence the PA even with no backlinks to these individual pages.
For Example; A website with DA-90 could easily have PA-40 without no Backlinks built to the page. We try as much as possible to have our DA below 30 on websites ranking on SERP for targeted keywords.
Finally, To your question - You should be able to understand now that there are lots of factors that play and that wouldn't make me give a valid quote on how much needed. Just remember the more the merrier and QUALITY over QUANTITY.
