Expired domains in 2018

I've heard that expired domains have lost thier weight and I've also heard people on here saying that it is very much still working for them. I would like to hear the community's thought about the power of expired domains used in a PBN in 2018.


If I were to build a small PBN for a keyword with low competition. Would buying 5 expired domains with decent metrics Set me off in the right direction?

Yes, it would set you in right direction and yes, they work perfectly fine. They take longer to take effect, but then again, everything in SEO does.

They are still working. One of my friends uses them on large scale.

They are more effective than new domains, which seem to be taking forever to show up in SERPs these days. They still do, just a couple weeks later than anyone would prefer.

How much better is it to buy a domain before it expires? Does buying domains this way help retain more link juice??

That would be a much better idea, mate. I say you go for it. You'll have nothing to lose and it actually leans toward something potentially profitable.

Nope, still working and I never spotted a difference between domains acquired before or after expiration. Both equally retain juice. The are rumors about devaluation for years, Google states they are working to devalue all juice on dropped domains that are repurposed at least once every few months, but the sky still isn't falling. Expireds worked a decade ago, expireds still work. Doesn't mean this game will go on forever, but Google seems to have a really hard time finding a solution.

I think it will also depend on the expired domains metrics - not sure how they are working now, but based on my last try last year, a good domain that has TF>25-30+, DA/PA>35-40+ still works much better as compared to a brand new domain. This can be tested when submitting a particular post to instant link indexing service - if it gets indexed within 8-24 hours, your domain+content was good. If it doesn't gets indexed within 1 day, but much later than that, then the link power isn't really that strong.
However, moving away from those expired domains, country level TLDs are working exceptionally well for locally searched keywords. When a local IP is used to search for a particular keyword, a local domain will have much better ranking capacity as compared to other websites, like a .com.
