Ok so I am planning starting a couple YouTube compilation channels and I need a little advice. I have been doing a far amount of research on the subject, however, I have come to a bit of a crossroads on the subject of uploading content. There seems to be a bit of a legal gray area with uploading home videos (such as stunts, pets, fails etc).
For obvious copyright reasons I wouldn't want to re-upload a Youtube creator's content, yet I see other channels consistent uploading hundreds of other "viral" videos with seemingly no problem. I suppose I just want to know once and for all: How do these people actually source there videos without getting in trouble for copyright infringement? From what I understand, some channels buy the rights to the videos, while others just ask original owners for permission. Are there some types of videos that are more legally innocuous than others? And what about uploading from other sites such as Instagram and Vine ? Is there some kind of loophole that I'm not aware of? Or perhaps its the case that uploaders of shorter clips (such as cat videos) generally dont care if their video gets re uploaded.
I am excited about starting this Channel, have done a lot of research and have a solid niche and SEO strategy. This copyright thing is really my only stipulation with this project. If theres anyone out there who has done this successfully or unsuccessfully? Id love to hear from you. I am aware that the compilations genre is a bit saturated at this point, however I spare time and confidence in my abilities so why the hell not?
