My Journey in Web Scraping & Data Mining: Still Searching for My First Dollar!

Hi I'm Abdu From Egypt
I’m an electrical engineering student, living far from my family, trying to make a living while studying. I decided to dive into programming and started learning Web Scraping and Data Mining, thinking it would be an easy way to earn money quickly.

The Harsh Reality:

After months of learning and practicing, I launched my first service on Upwork… the result? $0 earned.
I applied to projects, wrote a professional profile, even worked for free to get my first review, yet no clients showed interest.

The worst part? Upwork now requires paid connects to apply for jobs, and I can’t even afford a decent meal, so how can I pay to apply for work?

I Didn’t Give Up, So What Did I Do?
I started looking for clients directly instead of relying on platforms.
I joined Facebook groups and LinkedIn, offering my services to those in need of Web Scraping.
I built a simple portfolio showcasing my work.
I reached out to small business owners and websites that require data extraction.
The result? I still haven’t made my first dollar, but I’ve started getting some interest!
Lessons I’ve Learned:

1. Freelancing is not easy, but it’s not impossible. You can’t just post a service and expect money to flow in.
2. Skills alone aren’t enough. You need to market yourself and actively seek potential clients.
3. Platforms aren’t the only way. You can find clients directly and build relationships without relying on Upwork.

A Call for Help:

I’m eager to work and willing to offer my services at the lowest price just to get a chance and feel like I’m actually achieving something. If anyone here can help or offer
guidance, I would be truly grateful!

following your journey
The problem isn't in following the journey, I feel like I'm going around in circles all for five dollars and I don't even get it.

There is a separate section on the forum for this kind of threads you know.

Good journey.. Wish you make a lot of money very soon.

btw, what has made you choose your profile name?

Scraping is powerful, but the real trick is to show how it solves a problem. Try to build your skills in real use cases—like lead generation, ecommerce pricing, or competitor research. Also, BHW is full of people who need data tools—maybe offer a few samples here and get feedback. You’re close. Push a little harder and build a smarter position.
