Which one would you suggest for a newbie when starting out, XAMP or LAMP. I know there is the issue of low budget when starting out but I had much more luck and bumped into fewer issues with LAMP ? What would you suggest to a starter from your experience ?

Is it for local development or installation on a VPS/Server?

XAMPP is for local like windows, while LAMP is for remote like a linux VPS Buddy.

I would suggest LEMP, even for a beginner. Maybe Lamp, it's also OK. Also, take a look at Caddy Server. But I would avoid XAMP by any means.

It depends if you are looking for the stack in Linux, Windows or Mac I understand that it's Linux, because as far as I know, LAMP for Windows doesn't exist, but WAMP. In that case, with Linux I always like the LAMP route, because it's very easy to install.
