Who is better: School or Working Experience?

Just wondering if i apply for job to a company like (Facebook, Google, Twitter, etc) will that be better if i have a School Diploma or Working Experience?

In my case i have working experience more than 6 years on (Html, Css, Php, JS, Ajax, Api, Xml, Bootstrap, etc... ) So i feel much comfort taking a project from the beginning and finish it without any problem, Since i have self learned for more than 10 years now, and basically have done some of the most needed tasks, in web programing.

What i did is i apply to (Facebook, Google, Twitter, etc) and almost all of them sent an email telling that ( there is no interest to continue with me! ) with much nicer words :)

I'm thinking maybe is that i do not have the school Bachelor degree?

Or should i do some online courses, but not sure where?

If you pick the top IT companies in the world where thousands after thousands of University grads send their resume, what do you expect?
 
In the IT sector working experience is the most important. However searching for your very first job is difficult without a diploma. But after a few years of working experience they don't even ask your diploma anymore. In fact, everything is changing so fast that the things you learn at school are quickly out of date.

But perhaps this is different per continent.
 
Look for smaller emerging companies, or startups.

Startups love people who have experience rather than a degree.

As they are looking for techinical problem solvers, and not people to do the white paper.

I have 6 years working on companies with this technologies.
Do you know what courses online are the best to do, so i can add them to my CV?
 
First world countries (well Europe, asks for diploma with additional work experience. But they tend to ignore the diploma part if you have 40+ work experiences with certification of things like Cisco.
 
I know the online gurus say follow mentors learn from them etc. But studying for a degree is the normal process these days to get a job and then you can build up your personal profile as a developer or whatever. Ofc experience matters alot and you’ll learn many things working rather than just going to uni (which sometimes is fucking boring). However after 10 years of experience it’s kinda hard of going to uni or college. If I were you I’d start a bit smaller than Facebook, Twitter etc then build up my portofolio and scale it up from company to company and maybe one day you’ll work for them. I’m sure you’re gonna succeed! Good luck :cool:
 
Googe, Apple and similar companies stopped asking for any kind of a degree a few days ago.

Also, formal education is currently one of the worst possible investments. All it teaches you is how to waste loads of money while wasting time learning useless stuff with no commercial value, since you would still need to get an internship to get a job later.

And it goes for almost all fields, except medicine, law and maybe a few others.

You have loads of experience and that is all that matters.
 
You know how hard it is for someone from a third world country to get a job at Google?
The ones I know, all have PhDs. Not bachelors, not masters, freaking PhD's.. Comon.
 
You do not try getting job in Google if you are not from the country they have hq at.... -.-

Also it was just an example because if the big ones stopped asking for degrees, smaller ones will stop asking too... That is how it goes .
 
Both are important, but the luck factor determines when you apply for a job.
 
Diploma gets you the job but Experience is what will help you keep the job.

Online courses on your Resume is a joke, they Don't even know about the courses in most cases

Get some Labs/Production Environments going, so you can attest to you having experience by running your own infrastructure.

Buy some servers or rent some and start running config labs, do some experiments..

Don't know what you are into but I am an ESXi Enthusiast, and have a complete production environment in home and office.. and some rented in Co-Lo
 
You could get on LinkedIn and reach out to the recruiters for these companies in order to receive feedback.
 
If you want to apply for a job with an industry giant, you have to have both. However, that's just the tip of the iceberg. Some working experience and a diploma won't land you the job. You have to showcase that you have the competence they are after, display your problem-solving skills, and show that you are a creative individual. They need to know that you are an excellent potential fit for their community. Not to mention, thousands of people with your level of knowledge are applying every day for the same positions. You have to stand out, and prove that you're a rare asset for them.

There are two ways to go about it - get a diploma or start with small companies and work your way up. Either way, it's time consuming and all that you will gain is a chance to work for another person's company. Here's my advice... try freelancing and accumulate enough experience and capital to start your own company.
 
Udacity has online mini-courses/min-degrees that are sponsored by tech giants. If you complete the full course and pass the tests they help get you a job. Some are sponsored by Google for instance. They seem to be 6-8 weeks or longer, but if you're up to speed you can skim the contents and take the segment tests quickly.

They also have mini-degrees where you get a full or partial refund for completion. Those are also sponsored by tech giants. I don't know if it's global but check it out. Some companies are looking for eager people in niche areas like self-driving car coding, AI, obscure security angles, etc. Stuff no one is doing much, so they sponsor courses to see who has the aptitude.

But as someone else here said, it takes both luck and skills to get a good job. You can take low-level jobs and make contacts that have contacts, and if you shine they may pass your name around. This works for in PERSON jobs, totally offsite I don't think there's enough contact to get greased up the ladder.
