I’ve been testing and refining my Google Ads setups lately and wanted to share a few practical observations that personally helped me stabilize spend and cut down on wasted budget. Would love to hear how you guys approach these points in your own campaigns.

1. Managing PMax Cannibalization and GDN WasteIn my automated Performance Max campaigns, I’ve frequently seen the system eat up budget on brand queries and low-quality display/in-app inventory instead of hunting for new intent.

  • Brand Exclusions: I now routinely apply brand exclusion lists at the campaign level. If the direct UI option is restricted, I get it attached through support or manage exclusions via scripts.
  • Placement Hygiene: I regularly audit placements and exclude mobile app categories and low-tier YouTube channels, which tend to generate empty clicks when PMax tries to pace out the daily budget.
2. Signal Quality: Enhanced Conversions & Consent FlagsSetting up signals properly made a noticeable difference in how quickly smart bidding stabilized for me.

  • I pass hashed user parameters (SHA-256 for email/phone) via Enhanced Conversions on form submissions. The campaign finds target audiences visibly faster when fed first-party data.
  • Double-check your Consent Mode implementation (ad_storage, ad_personalization). When tags fire incorrectly or drop parameters, smart bidding behaves erratically and the traffic quality dips.
3. Initial Bidding Strategy & Ramp-upLaunching cold accounts straight into Max Conversions has repeatedly led to erratic spend on irrelevant traffic in my runs.

  • I usually start new search campaigns on Max Clicks with a manual Max CPC bid cap just to gather initial search terms and evaluate click quality.
  • Once the account logs a steady stream of verified conversions and search terms look clean, I transition over to tCPA or tROAS.
4. Landing Page AlignmentRelevance between copy and landing pages seems to have a stronger impact on delivery costs than before.

  • Aligning page headlines dynamically with search terms improves auction efficiency and overall engagement.
  • Keeping server response times snappy and assets lightweight helps prevent drops in ad rank due to page experience issues.
Scaling ApproachInstead of aggressive budget bumps, I find that bumping budgets gradually every few days while routinely pruning negative keywords yields much more stable performance.

How are you currently handling PMax display placements and initial ramp-up strategies? Any different findings on your end?

i haven't used PMax in a long time i just think its overrated to be honest for me its just a waste of budget it might work for someone else or i might be the one that did it wrongly but i've always been using the basic leads and its working well for now

Everything depends on the offer and the quality requirements for the traffic.
