Hi BlackHatters,
I recently took up Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) and Social Media Marketing (SMM) in a hopes to prove (to myself) my ability to learn quickly and also to exercise my entrepreneurial spirit. The sites I have gone for seem to differ from most of the ones I see regarding alternative revenue streams. These sites are not affiliate marketing nor are they video-hosting or content writing for Adwords traffic. I am actually selling a digital service (or two!).
I registered 2 domains back in early December 2016, installed a theme and customised the page to my liking. Since then I have done the following:
Month 1 - Starting Out
Spent to Date - Month 1
Cost of Hosting: $9.88
Cost of Domains: $18.12
Cost of Advertising: $36.72
Cost of Backlinks: $24.33
Total: $89.05
Revenue: $0.00
Stats - Month 1 - Website 1
So I just wanted you all to know what I am doing to further my education & what steps I am taking to economic freedom! (Insert dank Braveheart gif here).
I wanted BWH (after I found you guys, not sure why it took this long) to share in my journey with me and maybe we can help each other.
PS: As I learn more and more I want to write my posts and threads as if the reader has no idea what the acronyms stand for. I can't tell you how long it took me to find out what IM stood for which I must admit made me embarrassed (Internet Marketing) Sorry for those who don't need this!

I registered 2 domains back in early December 2016, installed a theme and customised the page to my liking. Since then I have done the following:
Month 1 - Starting Out
- Optimised the page speed in line with GTMetrix / Google Page Analysis / Pingdom
- Installed Cloudflare CDN
- Indexed the websites (Sitemaps.xml) through Google / Bing / Yandex
- Optimised the user experience
- On-page Yoast SEO (H1/H2 tags, meta descriptions, keywords, readability)
- Backlinked to Page Rank (PR) 6+ sites (about 100 total)
- Setup a Facebook Page / Twitter Feed / Instagram Page for both sites
- Put my details on about 10 or so local directories (Thompson Local / Yell / Google / Bing...)
- Messed around with Facebook Adverts to understand how that worked (did not go as planned)
- Made a coupon & tried (as hard as I could) to add them to reputable coupon / voucher sites (rejected for Spam no doubt)
- Integrated Mailchimp and built a few email templates.
- Installed a live-chat plugin and integrated it with a Slack account (for live-chatting on the go!)
- Try and get myself an SSL certificate for that sweet HTTPS (Google likes these - heck, customers like these!)
- Work out how to actually get a rank... Spyfu / SEMRush / Alexa they all hate me right now. No movement on any domain ranking 1/100 so far.
- Identify if Scrapbox can do me any favours
- @Shree was concerned I wasn't blogging on my sites. Perhaps I need to actually add content to stay relevant going forward...
