Hi,

I have a few domain names that i would like to buy and eventually redirect them to my site.

With that said, i need to make sure that these domain names won't have a bad repercussion on my SEO.

So how can i make sure that these domains are clean and not spammy? How can i analyze them? What should i look for?

Thank you for your help!

PS: I currently have access to the trial version of Ahrefs if needed.

Search on Google for site domain This search query will basically ask Google to list all the indexed pages from a certain domain name or Check Google Webmaster Tools.

You can use Archive.org to check previous activity on the domain and Ahrefs to check the quality of the backlinks

Check their:

  • backlink profile for cleanness (Ahrefs)
  • content that was previously hosted (archive.org, screenshots.com )
  • amount of domain drops (whois.domaintools.com) - I stay away from anything above 5

Thank you, that's a great catch especially the "amount of domain drops". I just checked your link and i can see the following:

Hosting History 2 changes on 2 unique name servers over 13 years

Was that what you meant by amount of domain drops?

check the domain in archive.org and try to check as many pages as you can to find if the domakn is clean.

Check the backlinks too in Ahrefs or Semrush to know if any spammy backlink is not pointed to the domain.

From my understanding, any sites has some spammy links linking to it either it is intended or not. So how can i filter through those through a big amount of backlinks? How much is too much spam links?

There is no amount of much spam links. To filter the spammy links, I would advise you to export the backlinks data from Ahrefs and filter the backlinks having DR less than 20, and are not the links of your website language.

Those will be the spammy links of the website. You can disavow them through Google Webmaster/GSC

A glance at the backlink profile can give you hints about whether the domain is worth further investigation or is a pure garbage. Most abused domains contain links from p*rn sites, pharma, gambling and illegal sites. So, if you see them, stay away from the domain. Many such sites contain links from japanese & chinese sites. So, it's advisable to avoid them or do further research.

The churn & burn projects can be identified by domain drops. If a domain gets dropped once every year or less than that, then it's a sign of a churn & burn project. You should either use them for a similar project or totally avoid them.

The sites that are used as content mill or cloaking sites show no signs of abuse, but when you register them, you see a Google penalty in GSC. This is difficult to identify and you may not find either backlinks or archive pages of such sites. So, everything depends on luck in such a case.

Check the domain history using the archive.org and check the anchor text & backlink profile by using Ahref. it will be better to avoid that if it appears to be spammy.

How to find a google penalty in GSC? :)

I would check the domain through Semrush and take a look at referring domains and the anchors. The anchors can provide insight as to what kind of link neighborhoods the domain has been associated with.

You can check the past history of sites in wayback machine, Ahrefs Is helps to analyze the quality backlinks, So I suggest you can continue the ahrefs premium version.

Agreed with other comments. Also ensure it didn't have any shady 301 redirect
