I'm doing some keyword research and i'm unsure what keyword to pick.

For the sake of the argument lets say the two keyword phrases i'm looking at are "run for fun" and "fun running outdoors"

The first keyword "run for fun" has a Global Monthly search of 110,000 but only 5,400 for Local Monthly searches.
The second keyword "fun running outdoors" has Global of only 22,200 but has 8,400 for Local.

Typing in "run for fun" into google search i get a lot of big name sites, eg. amazon. So it might be tough to rank in the top 10.
Typing in "fun running outdoors" i see a bunch of lesser web 2.0 sites like reddit.

I think in the course of writing this i sort of answered my own question, but what would you guys pick?
It seems like the second choice would be a lot easier to rank.

    Why not target both?

Ya i know what you are saying. But what if, instead of 2, there are 20 keywords of different variations.

I was just wondering whether you focus more on local over global.

Are you promoting for business? if so, you are targeting the region or worldwide. Because you cannot select just by considering the searches. Several other factors must be noted.

No, not any specific business. Just a site with AdSense on it.
Actually now that i think about it, looking at google analytics i do get visitors from all over the world so i should probably focus on Global and forget about Local.

Are you keywords anywhere close that competitive? I rarely will target keywords over 1500 local searches, because of the work it takes to rank them.

Unless you are selling a product or service in a specific country then go for a .com

If it is adsense related site then try and go with global to try and target as many visitors as possible as long as the competition is not too bad.

though domain does matter in SEO, it will also matter for viewers - traffic wise its only about content so does not matter which domain you choose. I had great pc gaming articles on domain which means nothing at all and is not related and was pulling great organic traffic, and I had mediocre content on super targeted domains with 0 results.

    Content wins.
