Providing the domain has a clean bill of health with a decent backlink profile you will be starting off with a leg up using an expired domain. If however the domain has been spammed to death in the past with a dodgy history you could be starting out at a major disadvantage.

Get a brand new domain and build your own backlinks from there, the only downside is that for the first 2 months your site will be in google sandbox, buying an expired domain can be tricky especially if you don't have prior experience in buying them. If you want the expired domain route look at services like domcop, they have some really good expired domains but may not fit your niche.

Start fresh so you can choose correct name from start. Nothing stupidier then a domain named cardealerarizona then the website is about balett.

If you can find a clean expired domain with no sketchy history you'll be well off... but fresh is better than a domain with either spammed link profiles or a bad history (PBN, etc, etc). I tend to use fresh for my money sites about half the time.

Google love an old age domain. Using an old domain is not totally a bad idea, just make sure that you get the exact match that fits your brand. It's also important to make sure that history is all good and doesn't have a bad record.

However many ppl may preferred the expired domains because of the strength factors that may have, I prefer new domains and building it myself, but also this takes some more time

Do kw research and find the top 20 domain names for your niche.
Check their ages. If all of them are 10+ years old, you'll never beat them with a new one unless you're a viral phenomenon that gets a bazillion links in a single hit.

It really depends.
If you are looking long-term then fresh domain is better.
If you're looking more short-midterm if you can find a clean expired domain related to your niche than go with that.
It has been my experience that propping sites on expired domains can be a crapshoot sometimes with Google.
So it depends I guess on your goals.
