Ask him for the auction price + expenses for the hassle, if he refuse just ignore his emails like he ignored GD emails

Ask not less than $300, tell him you see at least that much value from this domain and if he wants it that badly pay for that somehow otherwise you are not doing social service of giving back domains to those who can't afford to renew. It is your property now, build a site on that asap and if he mails again ask for xxx or xxxx amount for your investment for website.

It certainly not a trademark domain. Tell him to pay the money + if you want to make some $ if he doesn't agree then tell him to fuck off and use the website yourself as you had planned.

It's not trademarked and even if it's trademarked, he has to pay back for you.

I used VERY BIG INTERNATIONAL COMPANY trademark domain name. They sent me a message wanting it and they were ready to pay any fees, and even pay for the time I took registering the domain. I gave it to them back for free cuz I respected the way they asked for it.

Anyway, if you want the domain its yours and just block him. If you are a good guy, gave him the option to pay for it. Other than that, you are wasting your time

I bought an expiring domain from GoDaddy auction. The domain name is the artist name (FirstnameLastname.com).

And after a week I got an email from the previous owner. He calls me demanding the domain back. I asked him to pay least the amount I paid in the auction; he is refusing to pay.

I had been using the domain for almost a decade and had lost it because I had fallen on hard times and was not aware that the domain expired until suddenly could no longer access it nor recieve any emails at my [email protected] email address. To say the least, losing it has caused me a lot of trouble personally and financially. GoDaddy claims they contacted you about it but to no avail. I'm reaching out to you to find out what you were going to be using the URL for, since xxxxx is not exactly a common name and it's my trademark, and maybe see if some arrangement can be made that I can get the URL back. I'm a starving artist, so I'm not sure what I can provide as compensation, but perhaps we can to at least get a dialogue going. If you're using it for something important to you, then I can accept that as a gentleman and walk away, as it was my own carelessness that has put me in this position. After that I emailed him that the name is being used for an Alcohol Drug addiction information. But he refused and demanding the domain back.

I'm not sure whether the domain name is trademarked or not. I've searched every trademark database on the web, but couldn't find the "artist name". But he mentioned it's his trademark.

What should I do on this case? By law, do I have to give the domain name back?

Do whatever you want with it. Its yours and while i doubt he has any legal action he could take, it sounds likeche wouldnt have the money to if there were.

Just remember, he could be trying to scam you and no more be the former owner of that domain than you are.

At the least, id double the price you paid for it if youre going to see. If its really that big of a deal to him hell find the money.

Also, you could put up a temp site that is reeeally unpleasent to motivate him. Nothing that could be considered a personal attack, but, something that would make anyone cringe.

Few months ago I bought a expired domain from auction, couple weeks later the owner wanted to buy it back. I payed $200 or something but greedy as I'am I wanted $3000 for it. Their last bid was $1800 which I should have taken. Now they registered a new domain with same name but different extension.

Ask him if he's heard of internet marketing, and then bombard him with get-rich-quick offers.

If you want to be fair tell him that you will give him X days (whatever you can spare 15/30) to come up with $X.XX (which equals your cost + any premium you want to charge) and if he does then you will transfer the domain back to him. Otherwise he is out of luck. If he can't come up with $X in X days then he isn't serious about it and as someone else said it will probably just end up expired again.

Tell him to pay what you paid, that simple. If he says no, then tell him he can't have. Why should you lose money in the deal? He would have had to pay it at auction anyways. Tell him he's lucky you're even offering to sell it back, most people would keep it or charge 10x the amount. Make up some bullshit like it's your cousins name, or clients name so it doesn't sound like you're just squatting on it.

I've been on the flip side of this before, I let my personal domain lapse, and for whatever reason(it's a long name, and obscure as fuck - absolutely no value to anyone but me, maybe I pissed someone off?) someone scooped it. Ended up paying $250 for it back, guarantee the fucker got it for 0.99 from 1and1 or some shit too. Haven't made that mistake twice.
