Just wondering if one can increase DR & DA solely with high quality fresh content. or having Guest posts is a must?

Your content has nothing to do with DA/DR, backlinks do.
So you need to build high DA links to increase your site's DA.

Only backlinks help in increasing the DR/DA. The better and higher quality links your homepage has, the more it will increase. Links to article pages may contribute a little to it but homepage matters the most.
