So I started a YouTube channel last December.

Hi guys,

So I have been passionate about coding for like a decade, and worked as a teacher for a couple of years.
So last December, I decided to combine the two and launch myself on YouTube as an Instructor.
It was a long-time coming, I had similar plans in 2018, but had given up coz of personal reasons.

It has been over a month and I have posted 17 lectures till date. But here's the thing, YouTube isn't giving me enough impressions.
I do understand that its a competitive field, but getting 50-100 impressions? I sure am doing something horribly wrong?

Two of my recent videos, did however get 1000 & 600 impressions in a day, but the CTR was like 0.2%, which means people were not interested in the content!
I am currently sitting at 199 Subs (most of which are people who know me irl) and 2200+ views total (out of this, 1100 views are on my first video which was shared like crazy by my friends and family)

I will really appreciate any tips to increase my impressions, CTR, and watch time.
Please let me know what I can do to get better engagement.
I am working really hard with lesson planning, recording, and editing, but its disheartening not to get much response.

Hahaha, Thanks a bunch for the love. I do intend to cover advance topics in future lessons, started off with basic android apps, then moved on to a short series on Kotlin in general.

Once I get back to android development, which will be in a couple of lectures, I will start covering jetpack, I don't see many tutorials that cover Android Jetpack thoroughly!

No matter if those 200 subs are all your friends or not, it's a great result for doing Youtube for just 1 month.

If you do good content, doesn't break the rules etc., your channel will grow exponentially with time

No matter if those 200 subs are all your friends or not, it's a great result for doing Youtube for just 1 month.

If you do good content, doesn't break the rules etc., your channel will grow exponentially with time

yeah it's a specific niche but that only means, you need to take your time to find the right audience because I believe it exists. I have a history channel, I started end of November/beginning of December and I started promoting the content right away - I started to use Reddit and finally Facebook groups but not the general "Youtube - Push" groups because people there are just not interested in your content, choose specific groups like "programming" etc.
I also bought a Google - Ads- Threshold account from the marketplace and promoted a channel trailer - this way I could use 600$ for video ads while paying only 49$.

I also do Facebook ads where I uploaded my channel trailer and drive traffic to the channel - people click the link and are asked to subscribe to the channel. These aren't dead subscribers because they watched my trailer and know what content they're going to get.

Results? I started with 70 subscribers at the end of November (it's an old channel that I left in 2017). I'm now at 618 subscribers and 800 hours watch time.

IMO your channel looks so nice. You are in a hard niche and it seems you're working hard on it.

Since you're saying that your CTR is low how about changing your thumbnails bit? I mean your colors are good but try changing bit make fonts bit bigger and play with thumbnails see if it improves your CTR.

Try to promoting your channel on communities about learning android development.
Also make a potential viral video something like "learn java OOP concepts in 1 hour". On this video you can promote other videos.
lazy students who study at the last minute watch those videos.
Other than that use playlists.

If you can find a really good, high quality supplier, then yes, you can use it for boosting a video in regards to the algorithm. Boosting a video correctly isn't cheap though

I unironically subbed to your channel, It looks well done. The way I've seen channels like this take-off is to do the entire series from step 1 to release, where you create an entire app/game/program etc. People are really into that sort of thing it would seem, So it's worth tossing it out as a suggestion.

You should change up your thumbnails and titles a bit too. You can go in and edit all these things over and over again until you find something that sticks.

Try to put eye catchy thumbnails.

Dont put same thumbnails on all

to improve your ctr try to play with title + thumbnail combinations
for example:
17 | Maps in Kotlin | Kotlin Tutorial for Android Developers - Part 11
==> How to do/create/make Maps in Kotlin | Kotlin Tutorial for Android Developers - Part 11 | 17
in the thumbnail :
big text in the center "Maps in Kotlin" and below it "Kotlin Tutorials"
keep it simple with less text and change the colors (text and bg)

Quality of the videos seem great and you seem like a genuinely good guy.

I hope this takes off and the best advice I can give is to not give up and just do this by the side as it's very competitive and I believe that these learning channels take more time to build up.
Also, as other users said, try to do some keyword research to find videos that you could make that don't have any video solutions.

Do you have an impressive resume to flash out for the people? People like ex google ex Facebook developers as teachers, or very successful developer who made like an app with millions of users to teach them as well.

If not, you can always create a course and offer it for free via udemy, so once you have tens of thousands of students you could use it as your jumping point in every introduction.

Button line, just like google is looking for sites authority in ranking, so does people when it comes to teaching.

I havent tried promoting my channel via groups, nor have I tried running ads, I will try to find out more about the Google Ads threshold accounts, if its safe.
Your journey is impressive. I hope to get to a point where I can be sure that my hard work will pay off, even if its not huge.

I get what you're saying. I do intend to start a project series once I am done covering the basics.
My intention was to introduce the viewers to Android studio -> Basics of Kotlin -> Layouts and Basic Coding -> Data Persistence and API -> Advanced topics while building a real world project

I know there are other lectures covering the basics, but I covered them for two reasons
1. I have never faced camera before, wanted to give myself enough time to get used to it
2. I talk in a robotic tone when recording my voice, had to get rid of that before I started working on bigger projects that require more focus.
3. Most lectures I see, skip over details that are important, and I try to cover as much as possible.
4. Trying to make a one stop channel for my viewers.

Got your point, I will definitely try to change my thumbs a bit. I thought consistent look on thumbs would help users identify my content better. But I guess I gotta experiment with a few styles before settling on one.

I have done research for topics, and I do intend to make videos on topics that haven't been covered yet, but for that I gotta finish up with the basics.
However, my research is manual, no tools used. I don't have any paid tools as of now. I was hoping that content would be enough lol

Totally understood your point. I don't have an impressive resume, however, I have taught students IRL, both in school and college. So, I do know how to teach. But yeah, that's not gonna impress anyone lol
I will upload a complete course on Udemy and offer it for free as you suggested, hopefully that will help me get popular.

However, I don't plan to make paid content ever, will udemy be okay with me posting free content?
