301 redirection from a domain with good backlink to my blog

Based on my last tries, the result can vary - it would depend on a lot of factors, such as whether that link has been disavowed before, whether the spiders are doing their job in following the 301, script errors, etc.
If everything works like a charm - it does work, the 301 will channel all the link juice from the old domain, to the new one, and the new domain will assume 50-90% of the old domain's metrics in the process.
You will know that it is working when the new site experience a jump upwards in their SERP ranking - normally a good domain with good links will help increase up to 10 position upwards within a week.
If it doesn't, then that indicates a problem somewhere.

Does that domain need to be relevant or any good metrics domain will do?
How many domains are safe to use without upsetting Google.

I am not an expert, I just encourage people to use search function. These 301 threads are posted at least 5 times a week.
Also, to me it's an obsolete technique, though it can work if done correctly. And buying a domain for $10 and redirecting it at the registrar level surely is not a way to do it.

You will definitely see some changes don't hope for good rankings if your domain is not relevant to your new site.

Take a big domain. $500 - $2K price range. Very related to your money site niche. Then populate it with content, do all the onsite SEO as you would do with a money site. Let it rest and gather rank naturally for half a year. Once it's ranking and getting some traffic, THEN redirect it.

It will definitely boost your rankings in SERP but it will take some time, from one week to one month. So just have patient....

If this domain had good ranking before, it's the good idea.
It will give you chance to better ranking of same keywords.
In each other example - waste of time and money.
Because if domain not been in ranking before - you need also consider, that this domain can have penalty,
in this case redirecting will move penalty too.
