I brought a couple of expired domains for the purpose of 301 redirect to my moneysite. Now these domains have inner pages with PR. If i use the registrar redirection then it will automatically create the new pages on my money website that was on expired domains, which will result in 404 error because they did not existed on my moneysite. I don't want that.

How do you guys do the redirection of these inner pages. I know I can host these expired domains and then use the .htaccess or plugins to redirect them to the homepage, wait a while and then redirect to the moneysite. Is this is only way ?

    What do you guys suggest?

    Thanks

If your registrar is automatically sending it to the same page but with new domain, then the simplest way would be to just redirect on your money site.

On wordpress I use a combination of "Redirection" which has a good interface for tracking errors and setting up new redirects, but doesn't have the feature to autoredirect to home. Using "404 Redirect" as well takes care of that without conflicting with the other plugin.

One of the expired domain have about 100 pages and also have a subdomain with alot of pages. If I redirect all of them to the homepage, won't it raise a flag?

Hi linkking, it all depends on the domain but what I normally do is first host the site separately before I redirect it to my 'Money Site'. I first add content to the homepage related to my niche (normally outsource an article) and then redirect all inner pages to the root domain. I then let G##gle re-spider and re-index the site and let it sit for 2-3 weeks. Once the new content is indexed I then redirect the whole domain to my money site. Why do I do this? Well, firstly it tells G##gle that this site (domain you are going to 301) is now about 'blue widgets'. Before it was about 'red widgets'. When I then 301 redirect the domain it tells G##gle that I am redirecting this site about 'blue widgets' to my 'Money Site' which is also about 'blue widgets'. Some people don't bother to do this and they are missing out on some awesome power ;) Hope that makes sense.

Yes, this perfectly makes sense and I think the best way to redirect without raising any flags but there are a lot of people here in BHW that are using the registrar to redirect the newly bought expired domains. How do they handle the pages of the expired domains? coz like I said, it will make pages on the money site that will have 404 errors bcoz they never existed on the moneysite. 404 pages can harm your money site, so I think redirecting the expired domain with pages directly using registrar is not a good option.

You need to have a .htaccess file for the domain you are going to redirect IF you use my method above. The .htaccess file will redirect all the subpages to the root of the domain so there will be no 404's when you finally 301 the domain to your 'Money Site'.

You can do still use registrar redirect and redirect the 404 errors on your moneysite to the homepage too. ( there is a wordpress plugin dedicated to the task)

Expired domain (registrar 301) >>>> (404 on moneysite) >>> 301 to home page. No 404 errors on moneysite :)

How is your experience with this structure? Does it have any negative impact on the website rankings?
