blogging for money is not a good idea anymore. i lose many money with micro niche sites. you need to passionate about what you are writing about or atleast make it look like you are passionate.

atleast need 1 year for 1 blog to become profitable.

hundreds in different niches, aside of direct money pages i also use them for PBNs.
think of it this way - the more you have, the higher the chance to get a sale/lead/click
if you don't have enough budget for domains, you can also use subdomains. if one doesn't rank, just give it time and let it sit while you work on anotherone. over time you will have a network of blogs and then you have a lot more possibilities as with 1 blog alone.

It is always good idea whether you using blog for online business or solely for monetizing your blog. Getting ranked on google and having the organic traffic Google's provide can take MONTHS untill realy high amount of traffic starts to come regularly. Additionally, if you are doing articles regarding some subject, it is always good to choose less competitive keywords so you will rank higher at Google's SEO (for choosing the best keywords I would suggest using Yoast SEO plugin if you using Wordpress, it is simply amazing tool and free).

No you're not asking a weird question, but you have to know that blogging takes time to get things going.

Post at least once a week with good content, have a plugin to watch the traffic to your website (I'm using Insight for Wordpress, I guess you can use Google Analytics).

Blog is ALWAYS good idea!

Good content is always precious, believe me, I've a lot of experience with it. Good blog is destined to be a success if you write about what you love and do well. If you are a talented cook, write about it; if you can call yourself a guru of marketing, share you thoughts and experience with newbies. As for making money, it depends on your niche, on the way of you are going to monetize it, competition etc. I'm strongly convinced that blogging is great idea, especially if you can monetize it. The big bloggers still make a ton of money. Pick a niche and just stick with it, it will take time but if you're able to update 2-5 times a week with relevant content.. The content will be picked up by google and you'll be ranked. Then the traffic will come. However, this is a long play, its not a get rich overnight type of deal.
