you should not! unless, there is a communication about a plugin having a hole in it... otherwise, i update manually, and usually wait a bit

few years ago, yoast made an update, and whoever that went along, say their ranking drop. for most it took about a year to get their ranking back. those who had not updated, never got impacted!

it's not really something that's always required, but most of the time newer versions do include more options, use fewer resources and have fewer problems/bugs,
the plugins/WordPress developers try to solve the current problems, add some additional options and even enhance the code,
this can be related to security reasons as well,
overall, take a quick look at the changelog & update details before updating and make sure to make regular back ups in case u need to roll back

they say it's always better to update, to get the latest version, which is usually more complete, bug free, and more secure from attacks.

Wordpress is open source. That’s why it’s free. It takes tons of people working together to maintain it. Eventually, someone will find a hole in the security and will quickly repair it. When they release an update, that hole in the security is documented, and everyone who reads the documents will also see where that hole was. It’s a good thing your Wordpress is up to date, or else it would still be vulnerable to that hole that was discovered.

if you don’t want to update your Wordpress and plug-ins all the time, just make sure to backup your site files and database. You’re gonna need it to restore after a hack

Most updates are fixing security vulnerabilities. Enable auto-update for everything and make regular backups and backups of your backups ( you can automate all that) and you should never have a problem. I rather get an error like this that only effects the backend:
yWogq2D.png
(Got this a couple of days ago, took 2 seconds to fix)
Then a site filled with spam and redirects i have to fix up and restore from a backup because a non-updated plugin has a security hole in it and a bot took advantage of it.

One of the most popular plugins in codecanyon at the moment had a very serious vulnerability that allowed hackers full access to people’s sites. Even when the plugin was deactivated. The vulnerability had been fixed in June I think, but hackers started exploiting this in September and because thousands hadn’t updated the plugin, they had their sites hacked.

With each new release, they fix bugs, add new features, improve performance, and enhance existing features to stay up to date with new industry standards. So in other words, when you do not update your WordPress site, you are risking your website security and missing out on new features / improvements

I have a good deal of un-updated plugins and I have no problem yet. I mean I haven't noticed any snarl-up on my website. So I don't think plugin update is that mandatory

Where can I read more about this?

Tons of WordPress websites are being hacked through security vulnerabilities in WP Plugins, I had to deal with it quite a lot in the past. It's one of the major reasons for me to update the plugins. Plus, try not to upload suspicious plugins as a lot of them are specially designed to get your website hacked.

When a plugin developer releases a new version, they have fixed bugs in previous versions and/or added some enhancements to their product. For example: The Yoast SEO plugin just announced that they made the 10th version available for download . This is great news! Why? Because, the Yoast SEO plugin team has added a new feature to help you with your sitemaps.

Unfortunately, there are many people who do not use this latest version because they are unaware of it or ignore updates by choice. They may have outdated documents online that refer to the old plugin version, and this can be very confusing for others.

When you don't update your plugins, you're leaving yourself open to security vulnerabilities that could be exploited by hackers. Outdated plugins are one of the main reasons websites get hacked.

Updating WordPress and plugins is a very important step in keeping your website safe and running smoothly. It's always a good idea to keep your software up-to-date. So, please make sure you update to the latest WordPress version and the latest plugin versions when they're available.

Because they are updated versions and have better optimization. Usually it will result in faster load time.

Unless there are NO security fixes, New features and / or performance upgrades there is absolutely no reason to update a plugin.
(But since.. 9.9/10 updates are related to such.. you should always update your plugins.)

You can be "ok" with a slower performance of a plugin but you should NOT ignore any security fixes.

Best practice is to check individually for plugins if there were some recent security exploits related to it or the wordpress it self. Otherwise, i wouldn't upgrade right away since you don't know if it will break something :)
So you give it a little time to see if it will break things for others.
