I’m eager to expand my knowledge of SEO and am on the lookout for beginner friendly tools.
With so many choices available (like Ahrefs, SEMrush, Moz, etc.), I’m feeling a bit lost on how to begin.

Could anyone provide recommendations for:
The top SEO tools for fundamental research
Budget-friendly tools for keyword analysis
Tools that are beneficial for small projects or freelancing

I’d say start with beginner-friendly tools like Keywords Everywhere or Google Keyword Planner, they’re simple, affordable, and perfect for learning SEO.

If you’re just getting into SEO, you don’t need every big tool right away. Here are the ones that actually help beginners:
For basic research:
  • Ahrefs Webmaster Tools (free)
  • Google Search Console
  • Ubersuggest
Budget keyword tools:
  • LowFruits
  • Keyword Chef
  • AnswerThePublic
For small projects/freelancing:
  • Screaming Frog (free version)
  • SerpRobot / WhatsMySerp for rank tracking
  • Surfer SEO if you want easy content optimization
Start simple and upgrade only when your projects grow. These are more than enough to get your feet wet.
 
For beginners i think , you don’t need expensive tools. Start with Google Search Console + Keyword Planner (free), then add something simple like Ubersuggest or Mangools for keyword research. Both are budget-friendly and perfect for small projects or freelancing. Once you grow, you can move to Ahrefs or SEMrush.
 
You can group buy semrush and stuff which will give you a huge advantage right away

I’m confused about internal linking. Is it better to link aggressively from day one or gradually increase links as content grows?

I find mangools very good for starter, not sure why people are blocked on Ahrefs

For small projects and freelancing, combine free tools like Ubersuggest and Screaming Frog with a single paid subscription to either Ahrefs or Moz, since all three pull from similar data sources and you're paying for the UI convenience more than proprietary insights at the beginner level.
 
Me personally I like Semrush the most but AHrefs is definitely second place.
Semrush does also have a free trial so you could just use them and see if you like them.
 
Any tools suggestion for backlink checker only, free one.
