You'll have to build powerful links to gain a good G position. How many are required depends on the niche, Nobody can tell you how much you'll have to do to get targetted traffic. You just need to try linkbuilding and hope for the best.
If you want fake traffic, there are ways to get that for free.

I only use Xrumer for backlinks building purposes but traffic.
As stated above, it all depends on the niche you're working on, video marketing and lot of bookmarking can help in getting targeted traffic to your websites.

Directory submission and PR link submission also makes backlinks and increases traffic!!! 
I sold few products after a small email marketing campaign but it's pretty unconfortable sending emails via gmail accounts. I tried seolinkpro and autopligg, I got some backlinks but still no traffic. I've made also a blog, it's optimized but still no results.

2) What do you recommend: xrumer for forum spamming or craigslist posting for traffic (I don't need targetted traffic)?

In 90% of cases, your only converting traffic will come from Google. So your question "how do I get traffic", assuming you're not into some sideline project to try and snatch visitors from social networking etc, is the basic question of SEO.
Most of this forum is about how to rank well in google, and therefore, secure that flow of targeted, converting traffic. It's the essence of SEO.
So I would say to you, search this forum and learn about SEO.

write articles and submit to articles directory, linking back to your site

post some interesting youtube videos and show your url
i just posted 2 videos earlier, and within 3 hours, about 200 views combined...
im sure there are lots more ways, but these are most effective for me

Actually I wasn't asking about seo technics or how to get targetted traffic from google. Which is the best method to advertise a new product (like an ebook)? The targetter traffic which comes from google is based on keywords search. But you cannot search on google for something you don't know, something new. I am trying to find some ways to promote a product except the well-known email marketing campaigns (spam) :/
