Which is better? Backlink in an old article or in a new guest post?

Hello,

I'm currently working on my website link building, i was wondering what is the best way to get the best effects of backlinks (i know that this is not the only factor that makes a good backlink), but let's just concentrate on this:

Is it better to add a totally new article as a guest post on another site with my website link? Or should i request to add my link in one of the existing articles?

Nope.

For the backlink perspective, a niche edit is better. The article is already crawled and indexed.

"It makes you like a professional " Not sure what you mean by this, unless you are meaning a brand mention on a high end publication.
 
As far as I know, an aged article ranks better, so updating an old article is the best option

A backlink from an old article, or a niche edit/curated link, is better than a new guest post in my opinion. You don't have to worry about content, the post is already crawled and indexed, and the post may already have existing backlinks from other websites which greatly improves the backlink quality.

Even better, from the webmasters and bloggers I've personally dealt with, many people actually charge less to insert your link in pre-existing content and charge more to publish a brand new guest post.
 
Getting a link from the existing article is better if the page is generating traffic either it has backlinks. otherwise, I'd put it on a ratio. It'd be like 3:1. 3 guest post links and 1 niche edit link.

Let's think about it. How does the normal internet work?

Most people, publish new pieces of content and add links to websites. they rarely edit their article to add new links unless they're adding new paragraphs. (this is not a strong point but you can consider it).

My vote is for guest posts.
 
Thank you all for your useful recommendations. From reading your comments, most are favoring "link edit" which will more likely bring more traffic and pass more link juice if the article has some good backlinks.

However, @shihab_nymur brings a fair point, what he said makes sense aswell, in the eyes of Google it is highly unlikely for a site to acquire multiple link edits in a certain amount of time, that might trigger a paid backlinking attempt.

Does anyone have an opinion on the matter?
 
If you already have an aged domain that does decently good, then the backlink will probably work better for you. Otherwise, there’s no way to tell. Both should work pretty well for your site. If you can only do one, then pick what you think that you’re lacking.
 
You can use both for backlinks, but Backlinks from an existing article are better. Because it has already been indexed by google.
 
Guest post = tight control over relevancy, expensive.
Niche edit = less control over relevancy, cheaper.

In my personal experience. Niche edits lose their effectiveness if that's your only source of Linkbuilding. Sometimes an article that's been ranked using Niche edits needs a push from some guest posts to tip it over the edge into the top 3. That's been my experience.

I believe it's quite common to use niche edits at the domain level and guest posts at the page level, which makes sense to me.

You will need both of these methods to build a good backlink profile.

When you contact webmasters, some will either agree with one or the other, so is not like you're in a store ordering what you want. In most cases, you'll get what webmasters want.

Anyway, I suggest you use them both. And also you should add some free content to your strategy, such as Quora posting, Medium, etc.
 
Both are good. If its quality site and good traffic then try for both. If you have an informative article which will attract more user then guest post will be a better option
 
As already pointed out by the folks here, why not do both? You basically offer a new guest post as a contribution to the site while asking to refresh the link of the content you already have there. If the site agrees, you would only be gaining twice over. If not, you can choose the backlink. It never hurts to ask, right?
 
Both can work.
If you are inserting the link in the old article you will get instant results.
If you are creating a new article means it will take some time but you will get good results.
 
Here's another factor to consider: The page rank of the given page isn't a constant -- it can change over time. Perhaps, the new article has enough potential to outrank the old one -- have you considered it?
 
Getting a link from already rank old article is Good to have. Need to be Niche Specified.
 
I love backlinks from old articles.

They already contain a bit of juice.

But I don't mind new articles neither. A mix of both is good, don't just go for one.
