When Did You First Go Online?

Ask jeeves was awesome its too bad that it went nearly the some way yahoo did by getting so much bloat on the home page. It wasn't as light as google but in 2002 it was much lighter than today. It appears that google is one of the few that actually went down to become more minimalist.

It's a pity it lost popularity too, I liked asking Jeeves stuff. Yahoo's mistake was thinking the whole world had ultra fast internet. So the majority of users who had to set aside a week to download 3mb Oasis song moved to Google, so at least they could browse the internet without all the NASDAQ statistics from the last 100 years appearing on their homepage, every time they wanted to look at porn.

Somewhere between 1999 and 2002. Can't remember honestly.

Browsed yahoo, found a page about dumb jokes, and a picture of a penis that hadn't been cleaned for a while. Yes, people were already doing that.

Apart from that traumatic experience, I was mostly fascinated by the internet :}

P.S. Having done the math, should have been 1999 ;}

Back in 1999/2000 I was at a computer class during summer camp at my school. And I entered some random letters into the search and I ended up on a porn site. And they freaked out and I got in trouble. IDK why they didn't get mad at their tech support for not putting a filter on lol.

Lol, were the random letters "xxx"?

But seriously, relaxation and learning are two of my favorite hobbies. I would much rather spend a chunk of my free time reading online than watching TV, and I wouldn't really consider that a "waste" at all. It's like saying that going fishing (for the casual recreational fisherman) is a waste of time. That seems silly to me. :)

Knowledge is a waste of time if you don't put it into action. What is the point of having all the knowledge in the world if you don't do anything with it? At the very least you could improve your own life with it, if not someone else's, or better yet make a difference that will matter not only to you but the whole world.

Just a somewhat related thought.

2003 visiting AlbinoBlackSheep, EbaumsWorld and YTMND on dial up :)

I learned not to try the random letters thing a long time ago! Something about beastiality really freaks me the f out.

I really liked asking Jeeves questions too. I even liked the commercials. Poor Jeeves...

It's funny that you all mentioned G's minimum approach. I was actually staring at the G home page today and realized just how lite and fast it is. I've always liked bright, super simple designs, but that's definitely not the trend these days. Go look at a major gossip site and see how much shit is everywhere.

That story reminded me of my first encounter with Internet porn. :lmao:

I was 11 years old and I was searching for "StarCraft Cheat Codes" on Google at home (my parents had a filter on the Internet and the computer was in the living room).

I was hoping to find some real esoteric cheat codes for StarCraft, so I went to page 11 on Google. I thought the further down you went, the more esoteric the cheat codes (this was mostly true when I searched at the time).

Little did I know, anything past page 10 is irrelevant to your search, so I clicked on a link that said "StarCraft Cheat Codes StarCraft Cheats StaCraft Unlimited Time Cheats", but when I clicked the link, I saw what could not be unseen.

Pop-ups of breasts everywhere! They filled the screen, slowed the computer, and hijacked my field of vision! The worst part was that my parents nearby in the kitchen, so I had to 'x' out of 30+ pop-ups before they saw. I had never clicked so fast in my life.

After it was all done, I sat in a corner in foetal position banging my head against the wall.

April 2nd, 2003 at 5:14 p.m. I was shown "https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WIPkldAALu0" on eBaum's World by my (at the time) step-mother. That was also the first time I had used a desktop computer.

That reminded of Bill Cosby and his failed meme request, he wanted the Internet to do a meme of him, it backfired big time. Rather hilarious if you ask me.

1992 for me. I spent $3000 for an Acer Acros with a HUGE hard drive
consisting of 800 Megs and a 14.4 US Robotics modem. Plus, I had
8 megs of ram. Regular internet wasn't available in my area at that
time, so AOL dial-up was my only choice.

Times sure have changed (for the better, I might add). :)

I had a similar thing happen to me but instead of star craft cheat codes I was searching for anime fanpages and when I went to a page that had porn after repeating the name so much in the link.

Early 90s (1991 or 1992?) I believe it was based on the home we lived in... not real sure of the year.

Prodigy Dial up from my home in Wall Township NJ to a nearby town, Red Bank. It cost me a quarter to get connected each time as it was not a local call.

The first time I went online was in 1982/1983 with an Acorn Electron and Pace Nightingale Modem
There was no Internet then but you could dial into Bulletin Boards, Prestel and University Computers.

W130SN , I was not even born back in that time lol

Can't remember the year but I remember thinking "man I'm a hardcore badass downloading this 20mb perfect dark ROM"

You sound like my family (and probably the majority of "normal" people).

i spent 8 years in college, 3 of that post graduate. What did I want to do with my $200k education? Absolutely nothing! I just thought it was fun to learn. Other people thought I was supposed to use it to actually do things.

If I could figure out a way around the whole need for money thing, I would spend the rest of my life in classes.

Short version- you win. 😜

What was his marketing team thinking‽ It's almost as if they wanted that to happen. :D

Was it at least hentai?
:joke:

lol some internet "oldies" here...my first time was around 2000, internet was extremely slow and you had to pay per minute haha
