The overwhelming presence of the internet just amazes me. There are very few industries that it doesn't impact in some way today. Even something as simple is "fishing". I bought some new lures today. Where did I buy them from? Amazon dot com. That's really incredible to me.

It hasn't been this way for very long. Not to sound like an old fart, but in my undergraduate senior thesis in business I wrote how "The Internet Will Have Virtually No Impact On Business", or something to that effect. I knew that I was going against the grain (as was my intent), but I actually believed that. I thought it was a dumb fad that would pass. Yep, I was wrong.

My memory of details sucks so bad, but I do remember the first time I went online. I was in the military, stationed in Alaska (beautiful, btw). I was about to retire, but a friend asked me to come to his house to see something cool he was working on. It was the winter of 1992. We went into his basement office and he turned on his computer. I had to wait a few minutes while he rigged up his phone to connect it to the jumbo PC. He pressed some buttons, the phone made some funny sounds, and there it was- the internet.

I was amazed. We could only play around on it for an hour or so because he explained that it was really expensive because he had to dial long distance numbers to connect. But it was amazing! All of a sudden the computer changed from me engaging with myself, to me engaging with people from all over the world. It retrospect, what we were looking at (boards) was pretty dumb, but the ability to share information on a massive scale with random people all over the planet really struck me.

So when did you first go online?

me 1993 if I'm right. When a house and a computer cost the same amount of money in my part of the world.

Last week... now I'm an internet millionaire - wanna buy my WSO? ^^

in 2007 or 08 I guess in my school computer lab. I got internet conncetion in on my pc in 2010-11

2004 in my home, probably before in 2003 at school, can't remember.

Using Internet since 2000 , when i created my first yahoomail account .

i guess 2007, connected internet with Nokia PC suite.

Hmm, well I remember going online with the school computer lab computer when I was in first or second grade, so that'd be 2002ish

The first time I went online was in 1982/1983 with an Acorn Electron and Pace Nightingale Modem
There was no Internet then but you could dial into Bulletin Boards, Prestel and University Computers.

Hmmm. I went "online" in 1994, but never go the internet at home until 1996. Ah, back in the day when you would loudly dial in at night to look up some porn, then by the time you found a pic the loading time would put you to sleep.

I'm enjoying your answers!

LostConnection- I thought you are a lot older.

W130- I thought you are a youngster.

Shows what I know.

Ahh the long wait for the solitary porn pic download.... What a bummer that was.

I got busted by a young girl around 1995. Was pulling up porn in the college computer lab. I'll never forget the look on her face!

I think for me it was around 2004-2006. Played club penguin and Cartoon Network game all the time.
