What free WordPress Theme would you recommend?

what why?
unless you need convenience &/ struggling to code what you need
then yes I guess it really does considering GP is pretty much barebones out of the package.
But if you are using more or less optimized plugins, it is still lighter than alot of the other alternatives

Do not settle for a cheap theme(bad for seo). Buy a festingers vault account and you can get literally any premuim theme and plugin you want for less than 30$
 
I would recommend the GeneratePress theme. It is a well-established and highly regarded free WordPress theme that can meet your requirements.
 
Oh nooo the Astra theme uffff.......but I will try the free Astra and generatepress theme try if they are showing category descriptions.
Now I have the Sparkling theme no luck- no category descriptions showing up.
I have the AIO seo plugin installed is this maybe the cause of this or does wordpress has complete removed this category function ?

Now I see in my free AIO plugin settings under Taxonomy search visibility that Title and Meta descriptions function is added- but not works....

When I add this code into my archive.php

when

It breaks the theme after removing the code the theme not works and showign this error (below screenshot) so I must delete the theme.
This is complete silly.

Are the themes you are suggesting also optimized for mobile?

It often happens to me that when I analyze my blogs from the Google Search Console I am notified that on the mobile side the texts are too small.
 
Thank you guys ! Now I found 4 themes who are showing the category page description, ufffff.....
now I can do finish my site setup and design work in wp. My gosh my head is overload today with this arkward wordpress......need a little bit rest today tomorrow I have full energy again.

I like Sqwuarespace so much but when you have three separate domains that would cost me 90€ every month without otcher costs like Linkedin business subscriptions and others so I use wordpress. Wordpress is more flexible in seo when you build category pages, content hubs etc,etc....to gain multiple serp listings, I have not seen this on an Squarespace site.

Yes I will add a page "ressources" to my site as contenthub and for the categories I write a different description as it is on the category page itself to avoid double content on same domain.
Contenthub: when you have multiple categories please use H2 ttitle for each in the contenthub, see the site if bloomberg.com/europe and learn then you will know how they dominate google serp multiple times. Have in mind that category pages and contenthub is a part of seo, sites like Bloomberg have massive capital to hire journalists for expert articles and hire experts to build massive backlinks .

But category pages and contenthub is far beyond a simple silo site.

Generatepress is a good theme !
But little downside of wp it's very rare to find themes who will show your logo +site title beside and tagline below, it looks horrible when you add a logo or site title and tagline dissapears.

OK I can live with that you see most modern sites not have a logo anymore they have a big site title and tagline. On generatepress yes you can set logo site title beside. Their category page description not looks so great it is at left alignment, it should be centered loooks way better, for this I must setup another hook in archive php/category php file to add an html function it, no thanks....uffff....
