I have used the Divi theme and had the most success with that. It is easy to set up and looks great, but right out of the box it will have slow load times so you will want to use the plugin Asset Cleanup which can speed up the homepage.
There are no 'mandatory' plugins to use. Find what you want to achieve and find a plugin that can deliver it. There is plenty of information on BHW on plugins to use on your website.
