I know technically this is illegal but maybe some of you have "friends" who have done something of this sort. I remember when spammers successfully did this with penny stocks. Share any details you may have. Just for entertainment purposes only of course.

The idea of this absolutely blows my mind, I'm sure SEO and other methods are being utilized to make people A LOT of money.

Seems like there is money to be made. I never quite understood exactly what spammers were doing. Maybe buying penny stocks, spamming news about the stock, then selling at an inflated price. Seems you could do the same with SEO.

The issue with this is, that it would only work after the stock was already hyped. The reason the pink sheet's spam worked, was that it was a passive approach, as opposed to people actively searching the topic.

If you were able to piggy back off something you saw had moment, index and rank after the fact, and get out on top, that'd be the most realistic way that Stock Manipulation with SEO would work.

Think about it. Buy dirt cheap stock. Put out press releases, get in Google news, maybe hit some popular stock forums, Facebook pages, hype the company up then sell it off.

I don't know where stock market "speculation" ends, or the volume of short trades or whatever it's referred to as you can do repeatedly, but this would be more into the realm of manipulation obviously with the mindset mentioned above and would likely have tight regulations where only individuals (market and blackhat experienced) could avoid liability.

What % of investors will put money into stock based on its facebook likes, or PR ? As someone who buys stocks, i look at the financial statement, and the strength of their order book or brand recognition.

The best recent example of a decent method around this concept was when the twitter feed of a mainstream news firm got hacked, and they said the president was injured in a bomb strike. Stocks fell through the floor, then recovered once it was identified as a hoax.

Instead of hyping a small company up for some profit on stock prices, why not do that with your own company and make 10x more profit?

lol pump and dump has been around for years and should not be talked about on a open forum :) it has serous jail time if caught.
and the profits range from 50k to 100k in a day with the right pumper and for guys with more investment it can be in the millions.

If you get bored Google pump and dump in google news and see what happened to the last few big guys that they caught

If someone really wanted to do this it wouldn't be SEO - it'd be mass press releases and social shares/buzz

Serious Money can be made during the time the fake news story is put out and the time it is realised it is fake.
Of course serious time in jail will follow if you are caught.

"The Hunters allegedly snared about 75,000 investors, mostly in the US."

"investors paid $47 for newsletters listing Marl's stock picks and $97 for a "home version" of the software."

"Newcastle Crown Court ordered Alexander Hunter to pay back nearly $1m"

so even if every single one of their customers only bought the $47 package they still made 3.5 million. They only had to pay back a 1/3 of what they made?

Holy shit.. that product was once in Clickbank and I promoted the hell out of it. Made good money though.
The UOMO stock also caught my attention when I was promoting the Marl Robot.

    I remember sales were good.

But I do know that you can find those "penny stock newsletter gurus". Choose a penny stock and buy them in advice then pay the newsletter gurus a sum of money (most probably $5K-40K?) to list the penny stock. He/she will blast to all its subscribers.

Here's an evidence to back my claim:

Watch the pump and dump in action.

why not instead of doing illegal stuff use social stream and RSS aggregates cross referenced with search terms and sentiment filters to identify mentions of brands/products on the web in real time and use that information in context to accurately predict earnings by measuring buying sentiment and popularity trends...
