The Ultimate Guide to SEO Siloing - Dominate Google in 2018

So still not understanding how to solve this following problem properly. Maybe there is some good plugin which can solve it, like adding additional content to category pages.

I have my category url: website.com/category1
I have my page url (which is the same): website.com/category1

When I call the url my category will load and not my custom page. So how I prevent this from happening? I can use redirects but I don't like it. Also, redirects will not work when they have the same url.

so the higher category pages will show more featured pages than the lower ones? Or are all category pages only showing a max of 20 pages?

Also are the category pages showing the latest lower-tier (let me call it that) posts or a static selection of those?

And sorry, I also have to ask: Why are you using pages instead of posts?

Tom helped me to structure my site correctly and I'm slowly seeing now some improvements in the rankings. I want to say a big thanks :)

Hi Bud
could you help us ?:) .. some DEMO site to learn the secret...

Thanks SplishSplash. Makes perfect sense.

Years ago I ran an ecommerce site with 6000+visitors a month which isn't huge on the grand scheme of things but it is compared to my non-ecommerce sites.

Now you come to mention it, each branch of the site was niche specific i.e. different brands etc under the product heading.

Eureka, you've just got me thinking big time!!!

Thanks again.

Just applied this to one of my affiliate sites. It has fallen by the wayside a bit since June, so hopefully this can pick it back up. Going to report back. Thanks for the post.

Thanks for you reply .. i will try it your way

Question concerning linking. (not the webpage structure)

from
site.com
->you make some links in the text. -> to the important money pages ?
->below 20 latest articles (what you do if you have more ?)
->below you link to all your silos

site.com/tech
->you make some links in the text. ... to which pages .. the moneypages of the subsilo ?
->below 20 latest articles of this silo (what you do if you have more ?)
->below you link to all you subsilos

site.com/tech/laptops
->you make some links in the text.
->below 20 latest articles of this subsilo (what you do if you have more ?)

site.com/tech/laptops/howtorank.php
->you make some links in the text either to the money article, the silo the grandparentsilo

here - no other links ?? like latest 20 articles in the subsilo ?

thanks for the info

I never really understood silo until this post. Some comments were also really useful. Definitely thinking about applying it to my website and posting results.

@splishsplash You mention only using pages...not posts. How do you associate the articles to the silos? The only option to do any sort of association when creating a page is by selecting the parent page for the article. Would I be right in assuming this is the method for associating an article to a silo?

I've been so busy, everyone, but I will be going through everything and replying one by one this week!

Ok thats great! I dont suppose there a plugin available that can do this for us is there?

What about posts that belong to 2 different categories. For example, let's imagine that there is a fitness site with silos fitnesssite.com/weight-loss and fitnesssite.com/nutrition/paleo-diet. We decide to make an article 11 Amazing Paleo Diet Recipes For Weight Loss. Will it be fitnesssite/weight-loss/paleo-recipes-for-weight-loss or fitnesssite.com/nutrition/paleo-diet/paleo-recipes-for-weight-loss. Also, should I link from both categories pages to the article and should I link to both categories page from the article? I will by defoult if I put them in these categories.

interesting point! Id like to know this too.

What happened to my post? I was asking a legitimate question about implementation and now it's gone?

I think my post went missing as well, maybe in the upgrade.

Anyway, I was just saying - amazing guide, thanks!

One thing I changed was I used cc child pages plugin which means you can use a single sidebar, with the child pages widget and then it automatically shows just the immediate children of each parent page (As dictated by the “parent page” option when you create each page).

Ok, let's try this again.

@splishsplash I'm not sure if I understand the implementation of this so correct me if I'm wrong. This is how I understand it.

1. Create silo page (e.g. mysite.com/laptops)
2. Create a category in Wordpress labelled "Laptops"
3. Write articles using Wordpress Pages for the silo and assign them to the category created in step 2 using the plugin Post Tags and Categories for Pages.
4. Add a list of the articles to the silo page using the plugin you mentioned List category posts.

If this is correct, what happens with the category pages created when you create a Wordpress category because all those urls have the word "category" in them. Is it ok that Google sees and indexes these urls (i.e. mysite.com/category/laptops will exist because of the created category as well as mysite.com/laptops because it's the silo I created)?

Just use pages instead of posts. When you create a new page select the related parent page.

Ok, so the idea is to never use wordpress' categories at all? Also, based on the example in your link, what happens if you have a toy that belongs under /boy and /girl?
