    Tom, thanks for great sharing. learn a lot really.

    From my reading, you manually create a category page and use that to silo, right?

    However, if you remove "category" from yoastseo setting, then will be any dup url?? how to deal with this?

    saying you create xxxx.com/dell-laptop category page, then also default category xxxx.com/category/dell-laptop, where you add normal post.

    If you remove "category", will be two urls same? or you create a different title name between manual category and default category?

    Just a bit curious how you deal with this situation if I understand correctly.

    Hey Thanks for this guide.
    This would be really a good foundation to start siloing.
    I have few doubts regarding linking . becoz reading is different from doing it practically. I cannot ask each & every point here.
    I feel, it would be better if you make a demo site as you have explained , with some dummy content & adding links to silos along with the wp categories plugin you used.
    This would really help each & every reader in better understanding the silo.

    Thanks

    I think this is a good example of what he's getting at. Perhaps the OP can confirm.

    Great guide - I'll have to implement on a PBN site to test it.

    I am still wondering how to implement this in Wordpress? I know that the OP is working on something like that, but since I don't know when the guide will be released maybe someone with time and knowledge can me help. I am struggling at this point, where I need to create category pages for the "crappy" Wordpress categories I don't want. How I am forcing Wordpress to load my custom category page ( to put my text and link listing in there) instead of the "crappy" category page of Wordpress. I have done this with a script inside function.php. But unfortunately, this leads to other problems. When I want to load post listing, then I load like whole posts in my page. Strange behaviour. (when I use OP's plugin or divi's post slider)

    Example URL Structure for my problem:

    Wordpress Category URL: website/category1
    My custom category page: website/category1

    I kinda need the categories because I still want to group my posts in categories and also to let click my visitors on category links, but then they should instead go straight to my custom category page.

    Questionable function is this one (it forces to load page first, if there is any instead of category with same slug):

    function loadPageFirst() {

    // get the actual category
    $actualCategory = get_category( get_query_var('cat') );

    // get the page with the same slug
    $matchingPage = get_page_by_path( $actualCategory->slug );

    // If no match, load the normal listing template and exit (edit if you are using a custom listing template, eg. category.php)
    if (!$matchingPage) {
    include( get_template_directory() . '/archive.php');
    die();
    }

    // Make a new query with the page's ID and load the page template
    query_posts( 'page_id=' . $matchingPage->ID );
    include( get_template_directory() . '/page.php');
    die();
    }

    add_filter( 'category_template', 'loadPageFirst' );

    Why don't you just 301 redirect wp category pages, to your custom ones?

    how is it being a douche for asking for visual example? nobody asked for his site. there are some popular sites that I think close to what OP describe as the correct SILOing and some people here also mentioned about those sites. toptenreviews, momlovesbest, etc. and I think they are close to what OP has described although momlovesbest category pages are still not the same with what OP has said.

    Think that is not perfect. Redirects are kinda slow I think (I could be wrong). Also I do not want duplicate sites and maintain all the time my category links. Maybe there is a plugin to create custom Category Pages.

    What I did:

    I changed all my posts into pages with this plugin:

    https://wordpress.org/plugins/post-type-switcher/

    You can bulk edit all your posts and turn it into pages

    [IMG]

    So now all your posts are pages.

    Lets say you promote toys and your domain is Toys.com
    Next thing you want to do is make categories - but then with pages. Just leave the 'post' section for what it is.

    So you make different pages - 'boys' 'girls 'pets' etc. etc.
    You now have:

    Toys.com/boys
    Toys.com/girls
    Toys.com/pets

    For this example we're going to stick with 'boys'. Add a general article on that page about toys for boys and do some proper interlinking.
    Next you want to make different categories for 'boys' -> like 'action-figures' or 'remote-cars' etc.

    When you make those pages select on the right under 'page attributes' -> parent -> 'boys'

    [IMG]

    Now you have Toys.com/boys/action-figures.
    From here you could add a page 'toy-story' and make 'action-figures' parent page.

    Toys.com/boys/action-figures/toy-story

    Etc etc.

    Make sure to have a supporting article on every page you create.

    It took me a day or so to change my entire site into this url-structure and I already gained 150-200 keywords in the last days.

    EDIT:
    Don't forget to 301 your old URL's

    @Jayder very helpful. thanks. but how are you going to show all the sub-pages inside "boys" page? is there any plugin to show all of them automatically?

    @splishsplash @hekke - would you risk implementing this silo method on an already established site (ranking in top 3 for certain pages)? It would involve change the URLs on some pages (and 301 redirecting).

    Thanks.

    If you were to fill articles up with Lorem Ipsum just to showcase, that would be nice. I'll be testing this out myself for a pretty popular keyword series

    Great post. However for those of us who are visual learners, would it be possible to make a quick demonstration video utilizing WordPress?

    Great guide OP.

    The only thing I'm confused about, is the final URL of the articles.

    For example:

    If your latest article is about "dell laptop 1 vs hp laptop 1" - "delllaptop1_vs_hplaptop1.html"

    and if you have the following categories:

    mysite.com/laptops
    mysite.com/laptops/dell
    mysite.com/laptops/hp
    mysite.com/laptops/comparisons

    I get that the article would be displayed as one of the newest 20 on each of the above category pages.

    But, would you choose the most relevant category to include when creating the the article URL?
    eg.
    mysite.com/laptops/comparisons/delllaptop1_vs_hplaptop1.html

    or

    Would you create it under the parent category?
    eg.
    mysite.com/laptops/delllaptop1_vs_hplaptop1.html

    or without any category?
    eg.
    mysite.com/delllaptop1_vs_hplaptop1.html

    or, am I overthinking it and it doesn't really matter?

    Thanks

    Great post, OP!
    I also interesting about Silo structure few month ago, searching for this question, read many articles and watch videos. Try to implement Silo for my sites too.

    Because we still don't have any visual examples from OP, I want post interesting video about Silo, with pictures and graphics for easier understanding of Silo. Here described 4 types of Silo.
    OP wrote that he studied more info about Silo but it's not work until he began from zero and try his last method.

    So, question for OP: is any of this methods closer to your Silo? What you think about this Silos? Or you think all this methods wrong?
    Here the video:

    I think it matters, at least for usual SEO it always was better use new post next to main page, because of main page(index page) usually have most powerful metrics and next inner page get more linkjuice from main page. Maybe for SILOs it's work different ...
    Also, in the continuation of this question, it is also interesting to learn from OP about link building for his SILOs. So, few questions:
    - Do you make more links for index page or you make more links for inner pages, or equal?
    As I remember right, you wrote that you have only few(4-5) links for your pages(posts) and that's enough for good ranking.
    - Can you tell exactly how much links you usually make for your site and for which pages? (How much for index page, categories, sub-categories, pages/posts? For which pages you make linkbuilding and for which not?).

    p.s. Even don't know how OP answer for all this questions on a last 2 pages. It's need much time. )
