Yep, the key was go into accountant companies, offer them a good deal and also a commission for every customer they bring in.... and since they got loads of contacts and they have a level of trust helps a long way.... I worked part time as an accountant for my dad back then. the same customers and method to reel them in for the hosting. So if your perception was I knocked on random doors at 15 you are mistaken and you are rightly confused/agitated by that motion haha, i did not think I had to explain the whole thing so I dropped just key words in the timeframe of things.... soo yes those were the contacts that I used.... and you are right.... no one in their right mind would pay some teen back then that money without some backing of an good referrer. As people got more savy they shopped around more and their need to redesign their site was less than their need to have a cheaper hosting. back then it was harder to communicate the quality you offer as the knowledge gap between offline and online was huge....that gap allowed to make good profit but it made it also harder to explain your added value to customers who are swayed by price. mind you most of those customers switched to more quality hosting after like 3/4 years discovering the added value of premium hosting.... this I heard from one of the accountants I worked with... but by then a lot of big guys in hosting were fallen or merged together.

During the webdesign stage sure 5k for 2 months work was awesome as a kid, especially a good upgrade from ringtones.... but during the hosting stage it exploded to around 10k a month....now I don't think you need to be a genius to figure out most young people at that age won't always do the right thing when it comes to money... combine that with a swift market change and lack of capital to reinvest... well you are screwed then.... soo off course it can't be all blamed on market shifts and what not... it has also a lot to do with your experience and where you are at that moment of your life....

the accountant method still works to date, getting those contacts is just not always easy... and the margins have kind of dropped but it is deff something interesting for local designers looking to expand their portfolio and exposure

1 - Start a business in an obscure ultra specific sub niche, you have little understanding of other than cash flow projections
2 - Be non technical
3 - Outsource development
4 - Business collapses due to technical debt + increased competition

fudge....I hope it didn't wipe all your chips on the table.... what I do see as a pattern....my mistakes always prevented me making crucial faulty decisions in later business....only by (obviously) the new business going down sometimes with new major mistakes haha. So I like to see that as a silver lining... I hope you have found alternative source of income :)

Nothing seems to last... but nothing really changes, either.

It's kind of funny how I feel like this all one big shell game and I guess the wrong damn hand every damn time.

I started there at 12 doing stupid jobs like coffee and copy stuff around... i got more responsibilities and looked at companies financial data and I saw there is money to be made and I used my dads network with other accountants to grow. If i did not have his hand to guide me through the mess then I would have never succeeded in that in the first place is my guess. Just lucky at the right place and the right time. with the ringtones I had to work hard for around 1500 tops... with the designing I would focus on 1 job for 2 months then get paid a lot more compared to ringtones... so the decisioin was a no brainer for me back then. but things don't always go as planned :P

Amen to that and kind of relieving that I am not the only one ...but also feeling sorry for others with similar stories..

Let us all btw not start how a lot of us missed the signals on crypto during early stage and others that did on time see it....never speak of it today because their wallets are filled with BTC hahaha

The grail is always in your head. The most profitable and stable things are always in the most obvious places.

And it is very simple, but you understand this only after several years of mistakes and spending a lot of money on useless trash.
They want to have several options for acting - someone has been honing one direction all his life, is scaled, and as a result creates an excellent reputation as a master in his work with authority.

Others are developing several directions to diversify risks and increase profits.

I have been making money on the Internet for more than 10 years, I have tried hundreds of ways to make money. As a result, two years ago I came to the unequivocal conclusion that there is nothing more profitable than an investment.

Sell hope. It’s been corona -proof and hasn’t changed in the 3 years I’ve done it.
Use google ads so you’re not relying on SEO which changes and takes a while to get going also.
Just my two cents.
 
Yeah email marketing and landing pages. Just create a good funnel and a month long email series. You can do this with every market and profit is always lucrative.
 
There is no Holly Grail - that's fiction. What suits one individual, may not suit the other.

As the mod stated already -have multiple revenue streams. Been that way before the dawn of internet.
 
the holy grail for me would be an automated system to make money from Fiver traffic or similar or another arbitrage system were you are guaranteed to make $X/CPM on all traffic you send - no skimming
