I have an authority site i want to start a blog for, but i'm unsure whether to go for a subdomain (blog.mysitedotcom) or a completely new domain name specifically for the blog.

I expect that because subdomains are considered completely separate sites from the main domain, it wont get any extra special attention from google just because it's related to my authority site, so i'm leaning towards a new domain.

With a new domain i can host it on a new server and backlink back to the main site.

The blog i'm starting will be updated almost every day for atleast a year with 200+ word posts, videos and images.

What should i do? Subdomain or new domain?

Are you blogging or making money? If youre really going to be dedicated to blogging than go with new domain, if youre just doing it to make money, than just subdomain. But it also depends on what the blog is about.personal or a certain topic

I would use a new domain as you pointed out you will have fresh daily content. This way you could link back too authority site and gain more Google juice.

I think you should register a new domain, if you want to make money and get backlink from your other sites.

If you are not going to do anything on your blog that might penalize your authority site... then go for subdomain...

if the subdomain get hit.. the main domain suffers too...

if you are going to do something that if caught you might get banned...
    then use completely new domain....

^^ What Virus said. If the blog is going to be clean I would put it in domain.com/blog though, to better leverage the power of your existing domain. Little point in starting a new subdomain if the blog is going to be clean anyway - better to add to the content and freshness of your main existing domain.

definitely put it in a subdirectory instead of a subdomain if possible.

Lots of response but no one ever really gave any reasons. Any one have some solid evidence that it makes a difference?

Most of the reasoning is pretty self explanatory really... Each strategy has its own pros and cons.

New domain = create backlinks to old domain from an external domain.
New subdomain = leverage small amount of trust leakage from old domain to subdomain (debatable).
Subdirectory on old domain = add new fresh content to old domain and keep the spiders coming back.

I would be in favour of #3. #1 is ok but incestuous interlinking between domains is generally a bad idea - may as well just put the blog on the existing domain IMHO.

I'd also add that there isn't really such a thing as "evidence" with SEO because there are always too many confounding factors to draw absolute conclusions. The best we can really say is that x is heavily correlated with y.

From your situation, it better for you to get a new domain. TLD domain is so cheap now so it worth to get it one for yourself. Unless your website do popular and your blog would write something related then you only go with subdomain because it may help you to bring traffic to your website and improve your SEO as well.

Thanks for all of the advice. I've opted to go with a new domain with a new hosting account too. A subdirectory blog isn't really an option, as the site is my main Authority site which i am building up to become my future business, so it needs to look professional, but at the same time the Niche also fits well with a laid back, non professional blog - So i'm going to blog on a daily basis and link back to the main site. I'm not going to be blasting the new blog with spammy links, the spammiest i'll get is 3WayLinks, other than that it's manual blog commenting on high page rank blogs and requesting links from webmasters on similar Niche sites - Which i already do for the main site.
