Running a business without education

But the interesting thing I got you peeps who do not judge a book by its cover

I'm s awesome taking advice from successful bhw members and when friends and relatives from other field judge you and suggest you something they do not know about!

Henry Ford, the founder of Ford automobiles, only finished a few classes in school.

If knowledge = money or success then the university professors would be the richest people in the world :D

People won't pay you for what you know, they will pay for what you do with what you know :)

All of these ideas are from my favorite book - N. Hill Think and Grow Rich. A must read for entrepreneurs :)

my uncle does this. he is very successful businessman. he has a packing & sealing machines manufacturing company. But he thinks all satelites are gonna crash abd internet is going to end. That's why he tells me not to rely on internet for making money and thinks i should get a college degree like him

@TheVigilante is this jeweller is self made or has a family jewellery business?

Education teaches you to think differently and take more factors into consideration.

I know many think it is useless, but it does change you, might depend on what you major in though...

Another valuable thing to remember is that you probably won't get an education after you have started business. Be it laziness or lack of time, so might be better to just grind it out first.

But I am pretty sure that the jeweller had none of these points in mind.

i think both are fine as long as you are really interested

college is great if you make it to a college like IIT or IIM. But getting into a very bad college like i did is waste of time & money because my teachers themselves seemed unenthusiastic about what they were teaching

reading books works great for me. it has improved my knowledge as well as my english language skills
 
To be successful in business you definitely need some level of education. Does it mean you need to go get a degree? Maybe not, but if you do not have knowledge and skills to develop and run your business you are very unlikely to succeed.

Ultimately the guy from the show learned how to be a jeweler, so he definitely had an education, at work or otherwise, but he definitely had to invest a good amount of time getting his skills up to a level that would enable him to start and run a successful business.

So whether you go to college or go about it on your own, you need to educate yourself. The reason that so often college degrees end up being virtually useless for some is because they choose the wrong programs, and this is precisely due to a lack of business expertise and vision (at that point very few people have a clear idea of what they will do with their lives).

Bottom-line, no matter how you look at or call it, education or knowledge, learning and acquiring skills is the key to being successful in any business.

Nowadays majority of the IITans moving to startups but yes their level of education is on another level!

not the formal education. Self education through books, courses etc. And its a process not a goal. So you have to always keep learning.

most college graduates think they know everything after graduation and they are unwilling to learn. That's why they are still doing a job and don't take risks like starting a business

So true

Just take SEO for example man it's a learning process and we need to stay at our toes especially with what Google has in store for us :)
 
You need to be smart to run a business successfully.

If you get your intelligence through education (school/college) or experience (trial and error) it's up to you.

But without a degree, you won't have a safety net if things don't work.

Yes they say education doesn't go waste so I see it as a backup in a way

My friend's dad actually owns a successful jewelry business. He didn't go to college.

He started working at the store when he was 8 years old though. That man knows everything about jewelry.

I could see education helping in some businesses, but not for the jewelry business. You learn everything on the job.
 
If you told me this 6 years ago, I would probably say yes.
But now, no, this statement isn't 100% true.

Where I lived, start-up pop-up like popcorn every day. People who are running them didn't go to university (it's expensive here).
Local news made a research about it and it shows that 60% of business owners aren't graduate but their employees all come from top university schools.
