Hello all,

I'm a beginner in SEO, so for now i'm trying to improve the ranking of my personal website, one of the ways i chose to do is by backlinking.

To explain better, i develop different websites for several clients, and they allow me to put a link in the footer pointing to my personal website on which i offer my services.

That been said, my question is:
- Will it make a difference and have an impact on SEO if the text link pointing to my website is under the acronyme of JD instead of John Doe ?

For those who are sure of the impact of such action, i would appreciate if you would enlighten me !

Thank you

if you are allowed to get a backlink from your clients, then DO NOT do footer links. they dont add that much power. Create a unique blog posts on these client of yours and then give yourself a contextual link. Trust me. it is a lot more powerful than footer links.

also please take a look at this

"Now in order of effectiveness, in-content links help the most, then sidebar links, and then sitewide footer when it comes to placement."

How do I get backlinks?
The broken-link building method.
Backlinks for infographics.
The benefit of guest articles.
Spy on your competitors.

Thank you for your answer. However, i cannot place the links elsewhere as i don't have the permission to use another location. So i'll have to do just with the footer. I'm hoping with some kind of compound effect over many websites it may start to have a significant effect on my SEO.

So the question remains, does it matter the name/text that i use for the link ? If i point to a certain page of my website rather than the homepage, will it promote just that page or the entire website ?

Thank you

you need to build links to your homage, if you want your home to get ranked for your primary keyword. if primary keyword is based on another page, then make the link to that page.
only use branded keywords; name of your business, and do not use keyword based backlinks, because as you said such compound effect will hurt you if the backlinks says: website developer.

Thank you man, that's realy good to know. Your valuable information surely saves me a lot of time !

That been said, if i am promoting my business name rather than "website developer" how will people then be able to find my personal website through Google while making their search?
They can't guess a business name they have never known before?

Maybe, if the content of the home page contains such keywords like "website developer" in a moderate way that might work ? Using backlinks with business name pointing to a website's homepage that contains "website developer" will work ? Is that what you meant ?

As of my experience it wont be a difference and if it is nofollow link it will consider as spam .

My links aren't "no follows", they are regular ones "do follows". So what you are saying is, even if they are "Do follows" they won't have any effect whatsoever on SEO ?

it will good for SEO when you make backlinks from niche relevant blog like if your niche " web design " when you post footer links in your client website like " design made by XXX " maybe it will increase your website traffic

You mean in order for the backlink to have effect on the SEO, the backlink must be shown in a website that it's content is related to mine ?

These links - be they on the footer or wherever - are only one small part of your overall SEO strategy. You're getting links & that's great. Anchor them with www.mywebdesigncompanyname.com / Best Web Design in Boston / Bob's web design shop / etc., etc., etc.

Those alone aren't going to do you a lot of good. Take them, cause they're free, but don't forget to focus on other contextual link building. For instance, guest post on a site about web development.

Just don't count on these footer links alone doing you any good.

You can use JD instead of full name without any problem. Plus footer links are not problem. Just make sure you have good amount of nofollows.

yeah mate, am suggest if you build niche related I hope it will work for you but am not sure about footer links

I don't understand why would i use "No follow" if i'm seeking to improve my ranking a bit. Isn't No follow denying google from pageranking me because of them ?

It says it here:

Google does not transfer PageRank or anchor text across these links. Essentially, using nofollow causes us to drop the target links from our overall graph of the web.

when you try to rank your keywords on Google, footer links only not enough mate. you have to add some guest posts, Niche PBN, web 2.0, Authority backlinks and social signals also.

if you have a chance to get sidebar links or home page links from your clients it will be very helpful for your keyword ranking.

I mean get nofollows from other sources. Don't believe everything Google says about SEO.
