As my 100th post I thought I'd share a method that I used a few months ago--which I'm planing on doing again soon (just been a bit tied up with too many things lately).

This method isn't something unique but it will make you money. It won't get saturated easily because people are too lazy to implement IMO.

So... I decided to promote the Google Biz Op offers you see in just about every CPA network paying between $32-$40 per lead. Since this type of offer can't be promoted with Adwords, and is a pain in the ass to get targeted quality traffic from other platforms I decided to see if I can get any success promoting this offline.

And here is what I did...

(1) I targeted a suburban neighborhood to start with
(2) Looked for local flyer/postcard printing and distribution companies
(3) Decided to go with postcards since flyers get bundled with other junk and people are less likely to notice the ad
(4) Designed a postcard myself and had the distribution company print and distribute it for me

I'll get to what the postcard contained in a sec...

First lets talk about the costs...

The cost will vary depending on the local area you are targeting. For me the cost was around $0.11 per postcard to be printed and distributed, which isn't too bad.

I decided to do a test run with 10,000 postcards so the cost was ~$1,100

Now, you can save some money if you just get the printing done and have the postcards distributed by some high school kids and pay them in alcohol and cigarettes (kidding). Basically kids are cheaper than hiring companies. I was too lazy to try and save a little since this was just a test anyways.

Now going back to what's on the card...

The card was in color and double sided.

As for the content, you want to make the person that picks it up and read it, instead of throwing it away. How do you do that? Easy.. Don't make it look like an Ad. Try to make it look personal, or try to make it look like it's important ;)

Since this was just a test method for me, and I don't think you would be competing against me (because I won't tell you which city/neighborhood I targeted), I'll tell you what was on my postcard....

Better yet, I'll show you what my post card looked like:

Notice that there is an "expiry date". This gives it a sense of urgency to the reader. Instead of putting it off to the side, they think "ok this will expire, so I better do it now". It's kind of like a utility bill, because there is a due date you know you need to get it done before the due date.

The Landing Page...

Here is where you can really bank some continuous money. What I did was make a site that was being promoted on the postcard. This site was an amateur looking site and it had an opt-in box where the visitor had to enter their "invitation code". This works well since the visitor is more likely to fill in the information and "log-in" to the system to get their "freebie" with their "invitation code" :)

Now, since they opted-in, you now are building a list at the same time! They may or may not get the free Biz Kit at that time. But since you have them on your opt-in, you remind them with followup emails, and you keep sending them other offers such as clickbank offers for get paid to do survey type of sites.

Remember you should not promote general IM products to these people. They are not as advanced, since they are responding to this offer OFFLINE. They don't know how to build websites, neither do they think they can. So simple offers like "make money on google" or "get paid to do surveys" etc will work well with these offline people.

Note: For obvious reason I can't share my landing page. But you should get a good idea of what you need on the page.. just basically a simple page with an opt-in box with "name", "email address", and "password" or "invitation number" to make it seem like it's exclusive. Then either redirect to the offer, or have to another pre-sell page. At this point it doesn't matter since you already have their email address.

The Conversions...

The conversions would vary obviously depending on the demographics of the area you target. I got a little less than one percent conversion.. it was 0.7%, so thats 70 people that converted out of 10,000 people.

The cost per lead was $32 for me, so that's $2,240 in commissions. Which is a net profit of $1,140. Not bad huh? The best part is that I have also build a decent list at the same time, so you can be sure that I'll be promoting more offers to them in the future.

This landing page approach offer works well since you are building a list that you can always promote to, assuming you keep a good relationship with the subscribers. You have a "super noob" list to promote offers to. As far as the're concerned YOU are their Guru. So be a good offline Guru and go make some money!

If you found this post useful... you know what the 'Thanks' button is there for ;)

Happy holidays and may 2010 be prosperous for all!

It must have taken a long time to distribute 10,000 cards and then even longer to wait for the conversions.

Not really. The company I used had it done in 1 week. And because there was an 'expiry date' people responded to it quicker. Took about 3.5 weeks or so for the 70 conversions (I think). I'm sure some conversions came after the expiry date too, but I haven't really been checking.

I like it, its more outside the box thinking that we need. Good job.

Excellent. Thank you for this. There are definitely some ways to increase conversions. 1st is the expiration time - you implemented that. 2nd is make it geo-targeted. You should make it seem more like a xxxxx city offer. 3rd, you can put some spins on it like say for example your were promoting Acai you would put a "get paid to lose wait" spin on it. Oh, and you can also use one of those "coupon codes" that the networks provide you with.

Once you get offline campaigns to convert, you will be able to use the campaign ideas to make a LOT - a LOT more money than just distributing them to random houses ;)

great thread man. You could easily take this national and make ungodly amounts of $...

My uncle uses postcards to promote his business. He swears that nothing is as powerful as direct mail (and telephones). Nothing on the planet. And he drives a Jag and has a sauna in his house. I think I will try this method of yours. Freaking AWESOME share man. Just great!

Where did you get 10,000 home address from?

These weren't mailed out, they were just distributed by a flyer distribution company to the actual mail boxes. If you were to mail it you would have to pay postage which is an extra $0.40.. so by just putting the postcard in peoples mail boxes you save the $0.40 on each post card.

Oh Ok I see..

I never really knew how the law worked as far as direct mail advertising.. Is it legal to just put flyers in anyone's mailbox? Wouldn't that be like offline spam?

I agree direct mail has a lot of money to be made. Even with this simple method, it has the potential to earn $xx,xxx per month.... all you have to do is invest more money and mail out to more houses. This test was done on 10k houses. Imagine 100,000 or even 1 million postcards

I'm not 100% on this, but I'm sure you get flyers in your mail box. I know I do.

It depends I guess.. maybe certain areas/cities have restrictions, but I'm sure people still get flyers in the mail.

How did you find the distribution companie? Online? Phone book?

I like the sound of this method..its a good leadgen strategy to any local city on your block...I think that with a few spins..this method could well payoff 3k a month..depending on how much effort and wisdom you put in it ..

Here is what an actual company would look like for those who are puzzled about what the distrubuting company will do in their town.

Thanks for the share. Now, I'm thinking about valupacks that I get all the time. And, the back of the reciepts from some grocery markets.

This is why I have a love/hate relationship with BHW. I love the fresh ideas and methods, but I hate how distracted I get!

You can't put flyers/postcards in mailboxes unless you mail them. You can put them in the fence, on the doorstep, hang 'em from the front door, under windshield wipers etc... But you CAN'T put them in the mailbox.

The Post Office has an exclusive right to the use of your mailbox. If you are caught direct marketing to mailboxes without paying the postage to the PO, you WILL get sued/fined/or JAILED. Scary stuff. I'm sure the company you used put them in the front door or something.

Good idea either way btw.

This is 100% TRUE my friend working for USPost

I think it depends on the city/town you are in. In my area the mail boxes do not have keys, only for apartment buildings/condos you need a key. In that case the distribution company uses the postal company to put the postcards in their each of the mail boxes. This costs a few cents extra since they have to pay the postal company to distribute.

I just targeted houses only since this was a test, I didn't pay extra for apt/condos.

If you use a flyer distro company you should be ok, since they distribute tons of flyers, if they can't do it themselves, they will charge a little extra to use the postal service.

You are right this is a great way to campture leads. This can be used for other markets as well, such as weight loss, teeth whitening, etc.

You can also check your local yellowpages to find a local flyer distribution company.
