So niche irrelevant expired domains with good backlinks - 301 or PBN ?

PBN. Reason being, that with PBN you can repurpose both domain and niche and it will work just fine.

If you are in a non spammy niche, where topical relevancy actually matters, then 301 can fuck up your site pretty bad. You are redirecting non relevant links and non relevant anchors.

Especially if the redirected domain is bigger than your money site, you will completely "repaint" it with a differet niche.

Going with a PBN would be much safer,
Redirecting such a domain to a money site would look kinda spammy with irrelevant links & anchors,
I would rather using it to create a new money site than redirecting to an actual ranking one, it could simply kill it

PBN is the only way to get some results there (don't expect much), if you 301 then your site is harmed.

PBN will give you good results

If you would like to take the risk, go for PBN. But if not, irrelevant domains are good.

If a domain (even topically irrelevant) has a strong link profile, but I mean STRONG, preferably min. of 200 RDs and the top 20 should be high-quality referring domains (contextual, do-follow links pointing to a root) than 301 will work. Such juice power can't be ignored and will move KWs up. If not strong enough then PBN, but you should make the page relevant from where you will send a link to your site.

P.S. This is data (not some opinion) from tracking more than 7000 money sites and 301 redirects combined together.

I say PBN. I think an occasional 301 is okay, but too many doesn't look natural and the 301 domain should have a ton of power with it. But PBN's are the way to go because you can create relevant content on them and continue to power them up moreso than you can with a 301 and still make it look natural and effective.

PBN is better than 301. Because you can repurpose in multiple niches by publishing semi-relevant articles. However, 301 can hurt in long term since it's irrelevant.

What about doing a 301 for the irrelevant domain pointing towards the PBN domain then to the money site?

With the pbn being topical to the money site?
