Ahrefs KD being one of the familiar metrics, we had to keep the kWs under KD 10. But to specific about how we measure the competition ourselves, it goes like this-

For each KWs(both money and info), we check through the 1-50th of SERP, looking out for both newly indexed and existing competitors. And finally, we define a KW as 'low competitive' only when there are not more than 2 direct competitors(containing articles that are catering to the same or similar search intent). Other 8 SERPs are usually low-tier entities such as forum threads, social posts/pages, irrelevant/distantly relevant articles, user-generated contents etc etc.

As a verdict, we make sure that the KWs we provide, are as low competitive that even a small niche site with no solid link profile can rank at 1-5th at SERP. And we've got dozens of proof that this works for many niches.
