But I really think "flip urr" doesn't sound professional, you should try to think of a new name

Flip urr does not sound professional? In what way, shape or form, please do tell. Did google sound professional when it came out, or twitter or even flippa for that matter?
I do not see how one would sound more professional than another. I like the play on words with flipurr and the fact I can relate it to a dolphin. If it crashes and fails so what, it will not be for a lack of not trying. I will design an amazing user oriented system. I could call it nothing and it wouldn't matter, if the user experience is top notch.

Most popular brand names we hear today started as thrash to the ears when they started. As they became popular, they became sweet to the ears. It is time and popularity that creates value for a brand name.

So, what's your background in buying/selling sites? I'm assuming you know the market very well to be attempting to launch this. Flippa clones crop up every day - nothing has even put a dent into Flippa's market share as they are all basically the same and have no traffic/buyers.

I hope you have either: a lot of contacts in the industry and/or a lot of venture capital - you're going to need it!
 
I have a question, why is everyone telling me to rebrand the name? I thought the name I came up with was pretty good. If you have any features you would like that others don't please let me know, but enough with the change my name stuff.

Money is not an issue, as far as creating contacts, those will come. What I have is drive, determination and a will to provide a great service to users.
 
I would think about marketing first not the product because of 1 simple reason you can't dominate a market by copying something. I would focus on a certain type of websites so you can be the market leader in that. Going big like this requires alot of money, energy, and time

Money wise, great. From my thoughts about launching a competitor, I hope you have at least low six figures to invest. Sitepoint/Flippa is a big, established brand to overcome.

IMO you should have been networking way before this stage. There are plenty of us who buy/sell in excess of XXX,XXX worth of sites each year and would have been happy to help you with building a "perfect" marketplace. If you don't have contacts now, you're really going to struggle to get the exposure you need going forward.

"Urr" on the ending of a word usually is associated with a form of comedy that makes something look "retarded". Take it with a grain of salt though, and move on.

I have a premium domain name that would fit well with your site. Let me know if your interested in it.

Marketing I agree is the biggest hurdle, which I have started to do. I am not expecting this to take off overnight, but slowly and surely like any great established business, it will.

Most people told me my idea was dumb, and no way could one overtake the big god known as sitepoint/flippa. This just gives me fuel to the fire.

I am sure some will embrace it and others won't but I welcome the chance to offer users a proper platform in which to sell sites.

It's always worth a shot. Sure it will be tough as hell to come close to where Flippa is right now, but it's not like it can't be done.

Google is the search engine giant but people still use Yahoo, Bing, Ask, and the others. You don't need to "overthrow" Flippa, but if you can just get a piece of the pie, there's nothin wrong with that.
 
Your idea isn't dumb or stupid, if someone has a better company than you, why would you not try to over ride him if you think you can and have a good chance?


But I really agree with meathead, a 6 figure is important, Flippa is super popular , and it will take more than just an year or two to over ride them. I am assuming you have a big budget and a really good team ? If so, then go for it. Many have tried to start a site like Flippa, in fact I used to own 3 different scripts like Flippa, but running it would simply be a big failure. Flippa is known everywhere :) Next up you will see their commercial on TV.
 
When trying to compete you have a long ride ahead.IMO name is second to the marketing aspect.Also to comment about taking on a big boy site backpage was a shot in the dark when it started now it is making a profit and the ones of us that worked CL and started to work BP also saw greater results by using both.I remember people telling me that BP was a waste of time,so IMO I think this has potential to get big if you can make a steady move forward.I also think working with a few people who can pick up slack for you or do things better than you might be an idea you should consider.

Marketing will make you or break you!
So make sure you use the full arsenal.

Not only sellers need to find and know you, but also the buyers.
You need buzz.

I will be glad to use your site.
And do make a strict deadline for the launch, perhaps with some pre-launch.

Like Meathead1234 said, you need partners and affiliates for a massive launch and initial momentum - maybe there's still enough time.

If you do not want to go this way, then Hgear's suggestion for market segmentation is quite good. Eg sites with:
A: Confirmed traffic
B: Confirmed cashflow/profit
C: Minumum Age
D: Minimum Value/Start Price
etc
