Hello,

I have a ranking article (money page) on the first page of Google, with the following keyword:
  • Football sport shoes

With that said, from my keyword research I found out that I can easily rank for the following keywords:
  • Basketball sport shoes
  • Tennis sport shoes

So I did create articles for those last keywords, it's been weeks and they aren't ranking at all. They have been indexed, I made sure of that by check with the google query "site:domain.com" and they are there. But when I type the keywords, those articles are nowhere to be found on the first pages.

The problem is when I type the keyword "basketball sport shoes", I get as a result my article "football sport shoes". Google prefers the unrelated article over the one that is more narrowed in that niche.

NOTE 1: My competitor has the same articles, and he is ranking with a different article for each of those keywords. Although my articles are way better than his, I'm already outranking him with the first one.
NOTE 2: Competing Articles that are low DA with topics like "golf/dancing shoes" are ranking for those secondary keywords. Although unrelated.

I can't possibly understand the reason behind this phenomenon. It's frustrating at times.

Perhaps I'm missing something, that is why I'm asking, if anyone can enlighten me with their SEO wisdom, I would be deeply grateful.

Thank you so much for taking the time to read my thread.

I think you should wait a few more weeks and check again. Do some social share, and if possible get some relevant backlinks for that page. Sometimes, google takes time to rank new articles.

You need to wait more and build some quality links

Social share but try to generate traffic on your own from those social shares.

Buy quality backlink with quality content and wait for some times..

Make sure you research the top 10 results for your keywords

What type of articles do you pull up?

What does this tell you about the SEARCH INTENT behind your target keywords?

Also, what are obvious LSI keywords you can use (based on your competitors)?

What is the WORD COUNT you need to beat?

It may also help if you install RANKMATH or some other SEO plugin and optimize accordingly.

Hi, it's not unusual that your old, high authority pages rank higher than your new page, and then your site SERP is lower than other sites' pages.

Would you please share your website address and more details ?

I had the same problem. Posted an article in Novemember... so in Novemember it had "index, deindex, index" problem. Then it wasn't ranking. So I added more internal links and now after almost 2 months it finally ranks.
See my post about this issue - https://www.blackhatworld.com/seo/s...-expired-domains.1279091/page-3#post-14026848
PS: I tried "request indexing" in gsc to re-index articles where I added links to the new article but for me "request indexing" doesn't work at all.

do you think you have created similar pages and google think they are the same, hence only showing one?

does your page in question show up at all in top 100 position?

Do you have a habit of sharing kws publicly elsewhere?
That alone might add more competition, bud.
Eagles are flying all around.

Could you share more insights like backlinks and your site age?
As soon as you grab low comp keywords, obtain a set of long-tail/KGR to dampen here and there all over the content.

Hmm, so do you think an article that's not even in the 10 pages can be due to a lack of backlinks? Because the competing articles don't have any backlinks at all and they are on the first page. Can you please explain that?
You need to wait more and build some quality links

My articles, 3 weeks now!
how old are the articles?

My site is 1 year old, and the pages are about 3 weeks old. But i can tell you that it's not about my site's age, because i'm ranking for many other articles in first positions.

I appreciate the advice though about the keywords, don't worry I'm not gonna use the real keywords in my question :)
How old is your site/pages?

Also, don't share your keywords dude... you'll have way more competition soon from BHW members, lol.

Thank you for the valuable advice, i shall use them. But the case here it's not having a lower rank, but i'm not there at all, my article is indexed, and when searched for with the keyword, it is nowhere to be found. So before the optimization, i need to know why it's not there in the SERP in the first place.
1) use ahrefs 2) use surfer seo 3) use backlinks this shall help you beat your competitor and rank

My articles, 3 weeks now!
I'd sit back and give it another month. If you are sure that you are targeting the right keyword AND if your content is the very piece that people want in mind when searching for this keyword, then google will rank it anyways.

Thank you very much! I already checked for all of those criteria, and I believe I passed them all. Including the search intent, by checking the articles in first positions for sustainable long period of time, it reveals the intent.

The only thing that I didn't really pay a close attention to is checking for the LSI keywords on my competitors articles. How do you suggest I do that?

Make sure you research the top 10 results for your keywords

There are some bit of similarities, but i've seen competitors who would be ranking for close keywords like these in the past, the article is not in the first 10 pages, i checked on by one.

However, when i type: mykeyword site:mysitedomain.com it does show my article, so it's indexed, just not ranking at all! What does that means? Could it be keyword cannibalization?

I appreciate it mate. I shall take a look at it. Thank you!

Thank you for your interest mate. To answer your questions, I only share my keywords with my writers. As mentioned ealier my site age is 1 year old, already ranking in first positions for other articles, my DA is 13, no backlinks for this particular article.

Did you mean that I should find and look up different possible variations of that low competition keywords to use them as LSI/second keywords in my content?

I have a surferseo subscription, I can do a content analyze on top 10 results for your keyword if you want. It will include bunch of LSI keywords they use. PM me your keyword if you want.
