I wrote this a while ago, but it got 'buried' in my 30day journey from the last summer.
Since the majority in this thread What is the hardest part of running Facebook ads for you? have problems finding an audience to test, I decided to open a new thread dedicated to this only.

Facebook allows you to laser target people, to the extent that you can target dog-loving single mom who listens to Maroon 5 and plays tennis in their free time.
One mistake that many Facebook advertisers make is they try to reach as many people as possible with their ad. While this isn’t entirely wrong, it’s also not the right approach.
For example, I don’t own a dog and never will, BUT I watched a few videos and liked few things regarding dogs so Facebook will ‘mark’ me as a dog lover and serve me with ads of everyone who target this audience. It would be best if you dialed down your audience to be specific and not so broad.
I use Google and Audience Insights + spend a lot of time finding some good audiences.
EXAMPLE
This is what I would do if I would try to sell a product in a DOG NICHE.
I would categorize my audience by different groups, for example:
1. Shops / Brands
What are some brands that people who would buy your products would be interested in?
Google:
- most popular dog food brands/list of dog food brands,
- top dog subscription boxes,
- best dog shops/list of pet stores in USA / best pet retailers.
2. Magazines (top dog magazines)
3. Most popular dog breeds
4. Communities (perfect for getting engagement) - I Love Dogs, ...
You get the idea of what to search for. Use Audience Insights to see if you can target those interests.
After you gather the interests you can:
The main approach with general products is completely different and is based on great marketing - you need an amazing / interesting / funny / potentially viral video + very broad audiences.
For beginners, it's way easier to start targeting niche related products. You can still sell a ton of phone cases, but instead of going with a black phone case, you pick a camouflage phone case and target military, survival, hunting, fishing, outdoor activities, ... niches.
I hope this helps and gives you some ideas!
Good luck!

You get the idea of what to search for. Use Audience Insights to see if you can target those interests.
After you gather the interests you can:
- Target these interests separately.
- Target a group of interests based on category (shops, magazines, authors, ... etc.).
- Narrow and layer multiple interests to get a more engaged audience (MUST also match option). >> Lately, this works best.
- Improve and expand your Lookalike audiences by stacking with interests to reduce the cost per click/conversion.
