I wrote this a while ago, but it got 'buried' in my 30day journey from the last summer.

Since the majority in this thread What is the hardest part of running Facebook ads for you? have problems finding an audience to test, I decided to open a new thread dedicated to this only.

-----

Facebook allows you to laser target people, to the extent that you can target dog-loving single mom who listens to Maroon 5 and plays tennis in their free time. :D

One mistake that many Facebook advertisers make is they try to reach as many people as possible with their ad. While this isn’t entirely wrong, it’s also not the right approach.

For example, I don’t own a dog and never will, BUT I watched a few videos and liked few things regarding dogs so Facebook will ‘mark’ me as a dog lover and serve me with ads of everyone who target this audience. It would be best if you dialed down your audience to be specific and not so broad.

I use Google and Audience Insights + spend a lot of time finding some good audiences.

EXAMPLE
This is what I would do if I would try to sell a product in a DOG NICHE.

I would categorize my audience by different groups, for example:

1. Shops / Brands
What are some brands that people who would buy your products would be interested in?

Google:
- most popular dog food brands/list of dog food brands,
- top dog subscription boxes,
- best dog shops/list of pet stores in USA / best pet retailers.

2. Magazines (top dog magazines)

3. Most popular dog breeds

4. Communities (perfect for getting engagement) - I Love Dogs, ...

You get the idea of what to search for. Use Audience Insights to see if you can target those interests.

After you gather the interests you can:
  • Target these interests separately.
  • Target a group of interests based on category (shops, magazines, authors, ... etc.).
  • Narrow and layer multiple interests to get a more engaged audience (MUST also match option). >> Lately, this works best.
  • Improve and expand your Lookalike audiences by stacking with interests to reduce the cost per click/conversion.

The main approach with general products is completely different and is based on great marketing - you need an amazing / interesting / funny / potentially viral video + very broad audiences.

For beginners, it's way easier to start targeting niche related products. You can still sell a ton of phone cases, but instead of going with a black phone case, you pick a camouflage phone case and target military, survival, hunting, fishing, outdoor activities, ... niches.

I hope this helps and gives you some ideas!
Good luck!

I got your Facebook audience list and I'm bummed that you shared that niche on this post. I got it as a review so can't really complain. This is the best way to target niches.

You really shouldn't be bummed, because there are a thousand ways to target exactly the same audience. There are multiple interests and multiple ways to target a single interest, from age, gender, placement, device, platform, .. On top, we will all target different objectives, have different offers, copy, image/video/carousel, ..etc.

So if everyone would target only ONE interest we would end up with unique targeting, targeting a pool of audiences that matches our preferences. - All of this, if people would actually find exactly the same interests.

One more thing, every time you publish an ad set you get a different audience pool. If we would publish our ads at the same time, for exactly the same audience we would both get different people :)

So this should be your least concern. Focus on your best interest combination, your offer, copy and of course your landing page.

+ I haven't shared any audience. I can challenge anyone to get as many as I can find before they give up :D

Killer share as always!

Really great share for beginners !!

Thank you! I really appreciate your kind words!

What i find hard to understand is how to target specific brands or titles, let's say that i want to target people who play a specific mobile game/PC game. Unless the game is ultra popular (Fortnite for example), the name of the game doesn't even appear on interests etc.

How can i do with campaigns that focus on targeting specific titles/brands on a niche? Any idea?

Same question

How do you target if your product or service is applicable to the mass market?
For example selling homemade cakes or advertise a food delivery service?
What is the recommended budget to begin with?

I recently posted an ad on facebook but the mistake I made was targeting a broad spectrum of audience which resulted in me getting a very low reach and engagement through that ad. After reading this, I now understand which specific audience to target to get better results out of an ad. Always start with a very low budget and then tweak it according to the interests which got you better results.

looks good, I am pretty sure you can get super targeted results using this method
good work
