Ok, they are ranked for several keywords for an than article. Like they have ranked for "Dog food", "Dog food types" and other several keywords for an article. This called LSI keyword. They are targeting not only primary keyword but also several secondary keywords. Even sometimes you can analyze some article that has 400 keywords content but rank for 1000 keywords.

if you use RankMath it will tell you what to do to optimize your content the way google likes it.
if you don't use RM you can use services like Neuron Writer, SurferSEO, Frase, etc. and they will tell you the same thing as RM... Although, I think there are other SEO plugins besides RM that can do this (SEO Pressor for example, I remember it had some optimization tips, I'm just not sure if they're as good as RM)
Anyway, it's a matter of optimization, ie. inserting LSI terms and SEO entities into your content. Basic SEO stuff...

Each of their posts is ranking for an average 20 keywords each. Not much at all.

Include related terms and LSI KWs in the content you write and link it properly
But there is less chance that you rank on top for 1 particlular kw

if you're broke they're expensive, otherwise I wouldn't say so. You can try finding free alternatives, maybe there are some free SEO plugins that can offer some level of optimization that might be good for you.
