Firtly I said this is not like 1988 SEO. 2ndly actully backlinks depends on keywords search volume. If you choose a high volume keywords you must need to take backlinks to get or stay on rank.
 
For a competitive niche in less time, NO! But if you go slowly (that's years) to build topical authority, you can eventually rank for competitive keywords as well, without ever focusing too much on backlinks, as with optical authority, you will start building some backlinks naturally. But again, that's years of consistent work.

It is very possible to rank without links but that would depend on your keyword research game and the competition of said keywords. Difficult keywords tend to have stronger websites competiting for them.

So if you have stronger competition, they can outrank your site.

It is always recommended to buy some links to strengthen your site even if you're ranking without links. It doesn't take much for a stronger site to push you out of the way.

You can rank without backlinks if you choose low competition keywords. But then the traffic would be low. Generally, long tails have low volume.

It depends on what kind of long-tails.

If you want to go this route, invest in an old domain with pre-existing ranked keywords and build from there.
 
Why does no one want to give you backlinks naturally first? Is it cause you have a crappy site? You should think. I expect backlinks, as my sites are good. Make sure yours are too, and you won't have this problem. People will link to you, obviously not as much as you want, as nobody is ever satisfied, they are chasing the backlink flying dragon.

If you can dig up very low competitive keywords, you can surely rank your website without any backlink. It can be also true for some low-medium competitive keywords but for sustaining the ranking, you need good quality backlinks.

Yes you can. I’ve done it many times. It’s tough though and will probably never work for most keywords.
