I have got a client who wants to hire me to ensure that their website stays low profile on search engines. The challenging part is that their publication has been published by very well known names such as CNN.
So here is my question:
How do I ensure that these publications are not ranked on Google or any other search engines for that matter? Is there any way I can ensure that the publications that are published by CNN or any other well-known names don't end up ranking on the top of Google?

Your feedback will be highly appreciated.

No index meta tag
robots.txt disallow all bots
redirect any traffic with a Googlebot user agent or other known bots
block traffic from verified bot IP address ranges http://ipinfodb.com/robots-ip-address-ranges.php
-----------------------
Put all your critical text that you dont want indexed in images
Use content lockers... I suggest the one at picrypt.org ... if you just want to make it hard to crawl.
Or captcha protect the content

Thank you for the really helpful insights. The info you provided will definitely help in solving the first part of my question.
Can you perhaps suggest what I can do to ensure that the publications published by other sites like CNN don't rank on the first page of Google. The publications are factually correct and they are about client's company who wants to keep it on a low profile for now until their products are ready to be launched in full swing.

Once again, really appreciate your feedback.

online reputation management is probably your best bet... It is a very limited effect art form though. The other answer is negative SEO... not your run of the mill spammy backlinks but the real deal... but that is civilly liable if not illegal in most jurisdictions... so a really bad idea. Your best bet is to hire a successful specialist in online reputation management.

Again, your thoughtful insight is highly appreciated.

Sadly you can't really do anything in terms of seo to prevent CNN et al. from ranking and publishing.

The only method for that would be down the legal avenue, maybe a C&D, but as you say the facts are correct, that would be a waste of time & money. Is this something a whistleblower has leaked out into the open ?

Discourage search engine to index that page. If the site is on wordpress, you can easily do that. Thanks!

Yes, that's pretty much is the case. The information has been leaked and quite a few articles have been published already.

Then it's a matter for the lawyers and HR. No doubt there's been breach of contract on the confidentiality side of things, but it's a matter for the legal teams to look into my friend.

Robot.txt can help you with that, also disallow tags, tried it?
