I have always been connected to YouTube in some way or another. But in recent months, I have gotten more and more fluent with 'hacking' the youtube algorithm and I would like to post my findings.
My channels
Make sure to look at the time frames in which I made these channel results because they vary a lot
Channel #1
This is my main channel. I focused more on good content, good thumbnails, and a lot of keywords and tags. I was offered sponsorship deals and got a lot of connections from it.
Channel #2
With this channel, I posted more content, and focused mostly on dominating tags. The titles and videos were short and I didn't use any thumbnails.
Channel #3
With this channel, I posted a lot of content all at once (8 videos a day for about 3 weeks ~100 videos) and let it sit, then I posted a video again to see if I had any dominance in the Tags (i didn't have much)
So in this post I will be showing what actually matters when making a youtube video.
How much and what kind of content should you post?
So how much content you should post really depends on your niche. With that being said more content = more views = more money. I've tried out different posting schedule and varied the amount of content I posted. And I found out that it doesn't really matter how much content you post. Your videos along with proper tags and keywords will naturally create an audience that will mold to YOUR schedule. However, you should target the timezone that you want your viewers to be in.
However, when posting content, quality is probably more important. something to take into consideration and I believe there is 4 tiers of content quality that you can use to your needs.
- 4th tier: The quality in this tier is probably something you wouldn't watch on the daily. This tier includes your software tutorials, and more get to the point videos. (e.g. How to mine bitcoin on your phone
)
If your trying to get a legit page and brand with actual subscribers and good content, this is not the content method you want to go for. This method is best used for stuff like CPA advertising, or extra sources to look at on a website.
- 3rd tier: This tier houses the content that is built for people that don't have anything else to watch. This is your compilations, text to speech videos, etc (e.g.
)
This type of content should be used specifically to build an audience, farm subs, and in create a general area where you have some sort of viewer attention. In my personal experience, I found this tier to be the easiest to get.
- 2nd tier: This tier is where I would categorize the content creators, influencers and content that doesn't require a production team. This content is typically what you would want to go for when you want to become 'famous'. (eg
)
This type of content takes a certain amount of skill and luck to get into. You need to create content that people want to watch. They subscribe to your channel because they enjoy your content.
- 1st tier: In this tier, you have the sophisticated pages. These pages typically need a production team to make this channel function (e.g.
)
This content tier is typically created by large companies or people with connections or money.
Bottom line. The content you post should be what you want to post but I'm not gonna sugar coat it. If your content is dog shit and not something people want to watch then you're not gonna get good watch time. Whereas, good content that people want to watch = more viewers and subscribers
How to get more viewers and more subscribers?
I like to think Youtube is an easy website. You have to have keywords, a good title and tags, and a good thumbnail to bring in the people.
With youtube, the algorithm is mostly based on your keywords and the peoples reaction to your video. So let me break it down.
Keywords and Tags
Keywords and tags are important for the algorithm to know where to categorize you. In your tags and description, you should have stuff that is found in your niche.
E.g. if your niche is beauty, in the description and tags you would mention makeup, fashion, thrifting, specific styles. Whereas, if your niche was fitness your tags and description would include arm workouts, leg workouts, weight loss, etc
Keywords and tags are also important for cementing your place in the niche. It's important for you to dominate smaller tags and keywords so that you have more reputation with larger ones. With my channels, I often used my channel name as a tag. This helps with the algorithm recommending your videos to people.
Good title and a good thumbnail
A good title shouldn't be too long, and shouldn't be too short. It should give a hint to people on what the video is about, but shouldn't give away the results. The title directly affects the algorithm too, but more importantly, it is seen and read by the potential viewer.
Here's an example of a good title by Mark Rober. The title tells us what we are going to watch, but it doesn't tell us the results or how it's done. It's shorts and gets to the point, without dragging on.
With thumbnails, it gets a bit more psychological. The thumbnail is the first impression we will get of the video, so it's important that it looks good and draws attention to it.
When making a thumbnail, keep in mind how small it will be (the average viewer uses a phone or computer). So loading up the thumbnail with text, is inefficient. If you're putting words in your thumbnail, make sure its readable, and contributes to the overall thumbnail.
Colours are also important when making a thumbnail. You want a thumbnail, that physically gets the attention of people. So use colour to your advantage. Increase saturation, have more contrast, etc etc
When you post a video, the individual video doesn't come up and the viewer swipes it like tinder yes or no. You don't get individual attention. You're competing against other thumbnails on a large page, and if your thumbnail can't draw the attention of the potential viewer then your out of luck.
Here's another good example by Mark Rober showcasing how to make a thumbnail.
He uses, a red arrow (red is shown to be more attention grabbing than other colours). The text on the screen is short and readable. And the thumbnail gives us a good first impression of the video we're about to watch.
Overall this is an amazing thumbnail.
