How much Bandwidth/Disk space do I need?

Hello all, I have been asking various host providers questions and some are useful while others are not.

If I wanted to create a site, with 4 pages and on one of those pages, I will be hosting 8 videos, all together it is 2gb of video material. One of the staff of a hosting provider told me that I would need dedicated servers. I understand that video streaming or hosting a video on the site would need a lot of bandwidth to make sure the site loads fast, allowing users to enjoy the standard experience of going through a site. However, I am on a budget, and is unsure of how many views the site will get. Thus I wouldn't be able to calculate how much bandwidth I would need, when considering the videos, and visitor count. How much bandwidth & storage space would I need if I'm uploading the videos to the web hosting itself, and has 100 visitors per day?

If anyone has any suggestion on what sort of web hosting I should try, I would love to hear it!
My monthly budget would be: $20-$50 (Well, I'm new to this, so I want to test the waters and not spend so much)
Provider has to be DMCA Ignore.

IMO you should be just fine with a vps too. Yes videos too take up alot of bandwidth and server resources but 100 visitors a day is quite on lower side so you wouldn't neccessarily need a dedicated server.
 
Hi ..why do you want to host videos on a your server?
Host them on youtube or Vimeo and show them on your website.
This will make your site load faster and will also not need a large bandwidth.
Shared hosting will be good for you.

you never load anythink heavy on a server you always use a free service and add a link to your website .

the other way where the server got your video on is old hat.

we are in 21st centry

let say i made a 2hr seo video , i would use yt upload it then use a link on my website .

for seo you need to think out the box of the link of the site the video sitting .

there so many offers with space on the .net with services there no need to upload heavy these days .

just plain old links work grate.


if you was providing a service where uploads are needed then your looking at a vps/ deadecated server

I believe op did mention he's looking for dmca free hosting which concludes content he is hosting cannot be hosted on youtube

Hello R_Fatale,

First of all, (without knowing which provider you have contact ) you don't need dedicated server , what you need is VPS with storage which can cover your data needs and enough bandwidth for the streaming it self.

So to calculate the bandwidth you will need :

If 1 visitor stream all 8 videos once per day then = 2GB bandwidth daily -> 60GB bandwidth monthly
if 10 visitors stream all 8 videos once per day then = 20GB bandwidth daily -> 600 GB Bandwidth monthly
if 1000 visitors stream all 8 videos once per day then = 2000GB bandwidth daily -> 60000 GB Bandwidth monthly

Ensure that the provider you will go with have good connectivity to avoid slow loading.

from my opinion you can use vps.... if you want to load your server too fast...
for some of the hosting provider give you unlimited bandwidth buy hosting from them.
no need to buy dedicated server for this...

Haha! It is actually adult videos that I shot with a adult model. I had a model release form and contract with her, which gives me all the rights to the content. However whenever I uploaded the videos to free sites, it gets a DMCA takedown. I realised it was her new boyfriend who was taking down the videos. It is very annoying (as I use it to promote my adult video shop that's on a cam girl platform site), so I'm thinking of uploading them on my own site.

Dedicated server is absurd suggestion - they just tried to milk you. :D
When it comes to storage, a lot of web hosting companies offer PURE-SSD disks and don't limit users by disk space rather then inodes (how many files/folders you can have on hosting account). So I would look for some hosting provider with that kind of service.
When it comes to bandwidth anything in your price range that has unlimited bandwidth will be ok.

It really not a rocket science since you can find a lot of good discount offers with pure-ssd hosting here on BHW. (i won't promote any1, just look around).

Haha yes, I was surprised to see how much $$ it costs if I went for the package they told me would fit my needs. Thanks for the alternative idea! Do you know whether these sort of service usually includes DMCA ignore?

I did promote her everywhere, and for good money at that. She earned a lot too on her end. Many of these sites, either just take it down without notice, or not give a chance to provide proof. I will look around for some deals here then :-)

OP you need space for your files + database + logs.

Logs grow with visitors, but at 100 per day a gigabyte will last for years.

Basically you just need enough disk space for those video files. Any entry level VPS can serve video files, you just need bandwidth. If I were you I'd look for unmetered bandwidth servers so you don't pay a fortune for the video streaming.

To answer your both questions at once: The thing you are scared about (hosting package misleading features) is known to come across from time to time. However, thats why I recommend picking one of BHW marketplace hosting services. Try one that fit your needs and has loads of good reviews. In other words, read reviews, inform yourself well before buying.
Unlimited bandwidth exists, just pick your provider carefully.
As mentioned, any hosting service with high resource packages and unlimited bandwidth comes in your price range too. 25-30 in my experience.
Just be sure to picking pure-ssd and most expensive (high resources) hosting package.
ps: there are some with coupon codes active so you can save a buck there too.
