Just curious as we are all controlled by Google in what we do and don't do to stay on their good side.

How did Google go from a small search engine that indexes knowledge to a power giant that rules nearly everyone's life.

I think Google is a conspiracy just like the 9/11 one's and the FEMA death camps lmao :fing02:

They are Aliens out for world domination :paranoid:

Because they got alot of investors and had the drive to keep growing.

Yes, tons of financial backing and some of the brightest minds in the world that have the ability to keep Google years ahead of any other search engine. The tools and resources that are available to help you help them grow their business are pretty darn good too.

Imagine the amount of money that's been spent on Adwords since you created this thread. They've also kept it simple.

Google started with an awesome product. If you were on the net before Google, you know how powerful its search engine was. Miles ahead anything else. At that time, "googling" for information was something new and exciting. New doors opening.

Then it 's just a matter of economics of scale and great management. Did I mention great management? I should also point that great management was absolutely necessary to reach domination. :D

It's LUCK buddy. One bright idea in a billion clicks.
They made it, have become Huggggggggggggggggggggggge

Kind of true! Gotta be in the right place at the right time ;)

More than a Couple of eggs, milk and regular excercise. Yahoo preferred to be vegetarian and never liked adventures and google grew under his eyes to the sky above yahoo.

Because, over time, the Google search algorithm outperformed all the competitors.

As consumerism works, the consumer goes after the best product, and in this case it was Google.

also, I think just the name "google" sparks something that just wants to make people use it.

Ever since the phrase "google it" came about, more and more people just use them.

Here is an example, my dad is extremely non computer literate. He wanted to know something and I said to him "google it" out of habit.

he said, "whats google?" My jaws dropped for a bit but now that he knows about it, he uses it. Same with anyone else who never used google.

The term "google it' may be the culprit here.

Clever mo-fo's basically.

In the years b.g. (before google) there was altavista and yahoo. They had a cool name but the search results weren't that good. Then Larry Page noticed, that in the scientific community there is a relation between your fame and the nmber of other scientist that quote your publications. That is how the Page Rank was born and the search results outperformed all the other SEs by far.

When all the other SEs tried to become "portals" Google stuck to its simple, one inputbox frontend and people (who are dumb as bread as most IMs should have noticed :D) stuck to the simple UI.

The realy genius idea was the auction system for Search Engine Advertising. Up to the point, Google had no idea how to make profit. Because they were the first ones to offer that user friendly, automated system they became the Xerox or Hoover of the SEA industry.

With the money they made with selling SEA and the coolest workplace in the world, they attracted the brightest minds of MIT and all the other genius breeders.

Money and brains, that is what keeps them on top of the competition.

because google knew you will ask this question and when you can't find the answer, you will surely google it :p

I think a big reason is because, at a time when everyone was filling up their screens with content, google just put a textbox and a button that said "search."

simple

easy

exactly what people want

I often wonder, if Yahoo would have simply made a white screen, instead of the busy yahoo front page, would things have been different...?

Sometimes, theres a lot of value in simplicity.

Consider how much money the drudge report gets. And that is the ugliest simplest webpage ever made...

But couldn't another company overtake Google, since they are starting to break away from being simple?

makes me remember the old days of keyword stuffing and same colour text as your background - it was much easier then - but definately not as much fun or opportunity.

That is certainly the reason why I don't use it or MSN. Dumbasses with their flashy-flashy graphics, motion images, and (worst) SOUND. Stupid Adobe Flash. I get mad an uninstall it after a couple of weeks. Hate it.

*cough* it was funded by the C|A *cough cough*

Now they have to kill you. nanothermite in your Moo Goo Gai Pan, and that's all she wrote.

They became huge in not just in search engine sector but also bought lobbyists on Captiol Hill in Washington, DC where they make the laws. If you notice Google is involved in everything...search engine, online advertising, cellphones (Android), they might open a grocery store online or something who knows. But they are powerful because of creativity, intelligence and backing from the people who make the laws in the US.
