Guerilla WiFi Advertising (Never seen before method)

I'm extremely interested in reading this...

This is a good idea but it is hard to make it profitable. You can't do PPV or PPC because it would come from the same IP address (if you decide to offer internet connection) same happens with CPA, hardly any network (probably none) would accept traffic coming from the same IP.

In my opinion the best way for profiting from this method is partnering up with local businesses and selling ad space using a captive portal or getting a commission everytime someone uses a discount they got from you. May be you can even get emails and sell those to local businesses or use them to market local products as an affiliate, these lists are not niche targeted and that could be far from profitable but you can always promote restaurants, everyone eats afterall
Offering local followers can be a good idea too.

Ok so basically a lot of people have mistaken me saying "WiFi advertising" with the social WiFi advertising. I specifically meant the hotspots advertising themselves in the area, meant as the microcontroller faking WiFi networks.

1. Your router does only send a 50mW signal at 2.4GHz or around 25mW at 5GHz ,which is nowhere near enough transmitting power to reach a meaningful amount of people.
2. I don't know of any router out there that is capable to advertise ~100 WiFi networks..
3. Also i don't know of any old router being powered by batteries as well as being as compact as a battery bank.

Yeah I got 18650s in there aswell. 7 without additional hardware. 6 with the microcontroller, charge controller etc. So at 3200mAh per cell thistwill be quite a big battery bank.

Exactly. Although as I mentioned there is kind of a way to force them to look at it. Also remember we won't be providing any internet through our advertised WiFi networks.

I doubt it'll ever get back to pre-2010 levels of profitability, but it's still one of the better methods for the amount of effort involved.

Exactly that. Or think about needing WiFi as a tourist in a very crowded area. There will most likely already be legit networks around, but you can advertise so many networks that basically only your "networks" will be visible.

Thanks, but this is not WiFi advertising as in providing internet access to clients and then showing them ads.

Okay so, there is no internet access being provided here, this is not anything that has been seen before. This method is just meant to get you boatloads of potentially very targeted traffic.
Also there is no "making this profitable" since the costs to set this up are neglegible for the amount of potential traffic you can get with this. Once it is running, you only need to charge the whole thing every few days, so the minimal power to charge this up will be your only recurring cost..

You go round the uk train stations or airports leaving devices your going to get arrested quickly

But still an interesting method

There's just one thing. How would you hide this. As a guard I would be very suspicious of people placing such devices on an airport or subway.

Would you just carry it around in your bag? I think you can get in a lot of trouble for causing potential panic.

There are surely many ways to hide this, one of them just carrying it around in your bag. Also because it is basically a powerbank, you won't be creating a mass panic with this lol.

What happens when they click on your wireless network? Anything

Or is this just showing them a domain name and hoping they visit it later when connected to the internet

Not a simple router, a custom coded router with a ~100m range, purchased from a tech savvy friend.

Yea, the offline marketing section is not that busy nowadays, but it was discussed before, advertising with SSID with the difference, that there's no internet connection provided. I guess the crucial part is leaving the stuff somewhere, where it won't get discovered. Naturally a high traffic place would be ideal, but for the very reason that's where it can get noticed very easily. You can imagine it's not that easy to leave something like this on such place like an airport, where the security is up the ass especially when the device looks like a bomb. lol
If you need to be present to carry the stuff around, it might not worth the time.

Since we are not actually providing physical hotspots with internet access, no.

Although there is a way to do this, with this device as well, talking about captive portals + ads or even phishing. (this is not a hacking forum though) I experimented around a lot. I can also force everyone connected to a WiFi network in range, to look at my "ad". Will not share exactly how to do this for the time being, if you're interested I can include that in my guide as well, if I write one.

True, true. But I think that you can always find a place where noone is and drop it near a dumpster or whatever. Or just carry it around to reach people as you go. Also could you link me to a thread where this has been done or demonstrated?

I can't seem to find the thread now, it was posted a while ago, i clearly remember the Wi-Fi SSID and airport part. Then i remember a thread, which was similar, only the guy lived next to a hotel and advertised for the hotel guests. He provided the connection, but it's somewhat similar in nature.

How much is the cost of the device roughly?

WiFi advertising as you describe it has been done millions of times and is still being done all around the world. But not this.
It costs around 60 bucks to make, give or take.

You insert the name of your product/website in the SSID expecting type in traffic from those scouring for free Wi-Fi.

Please read my whole post. People where misled with me talking about WiFi advertising. Basically youre "advertising" ~100 fake networks over WiFi.

This is a method to get potentionally bostloads of targeted traffic for free essentially. Not a way to directly monetize it in this case. Although as I also mentioned I could do some custom work if you are interested.

Do you guys really think anybody will waste their time to visit your website from reading a wifi SID? It's not even clickable. Yea maybe 1 person? People won't even do some simple stuff, imagine having to open their browsers, type the domain... What a joke.
