In SERP for past two days Meta description is showing in 160 characters . Previously it was showing around 200+ characters in SERP

My ranking and traffic are also dropped on past two days. Can someone help me with this

not any evidence about any update, traffic drop can happen because of many reasons from penalties to loss of links
search the web to find out more

Is it seriously correct ??

Apparently, they are indeed updating something. I have noticed that the 200 chars+ meta description is all now shortened to very short descriptions, and worst of all, some of the meta description contains the menu titles, which I do not know how did they manage to get those there.
Organic traffic is dropping, due to the shortened meta description - I hope that it settles down, and somehow provide a better 'guideline' on this, as I find it very troublesome and unfair for websites.

Thanks Guys

Am suspecting that, my traffic and rankings dropped coz of this new google meta description updation

Wat u guys are thinking about this?

IMO the correct strategy at this stage would be:

Keep the most important things at the start of your description. That's it.

It turns out they quoted one of my comments about this.
In terms of whether or not this is to do with the length (at least in part) of the meta description, I'm using a pretty old version of Yoast and this still had the old limit and the pages still tanked.
Yoast version name? 6.2 or older

I doubt the length of META has anything to do with drops in ranking. While META is obviously still important for CTR, Google has been clear it is not a ranking factor and has not been for quite some time. In fact Dan Sullivan was very clear when the longer META was introduced that Googles recommendation was to NOT change the META. Understandably a lot of people still did for reasons like using up SERP space in order to push the competition below further down as well as using the extra length to cram some more CLICK ME text in :) Regardless of the length of your metas I wouldn't worry the least about it affecting rankings.

I read somewhere that website speed is now factored more in serp, maybe that's the reason why you dropped.

Might very well be. Loading speed has been a ranking factor for quite some time and I also read there are upcoming algorithm updates that will focus on primarily on loading speed on mobile. Might be a desperate push to make people go AMP....
