I've noticed a lot of craziness in my niche as well. I was ranking #2 for a variety of keywords in my niche, but have dropped and am no higher than 5 for any given phrase. The #1 spot is now occupied by a crap site that has an EMD, but almost no backlinks at all. None of the backlinks have relevant anchor text, and the site has no on-page optimization. It's definitely an irritating situation for anyone that has put any effort at all into their SEO strategies.

Yes it's not new, I also saw it some time ago. But I didn't mean it in the context of the algo update. I was just showing the OP that there exist sites with almost no content that still rank.

The "empty site" is updating or changing hosting whatever. It might be temporary. Look at webarchive. I am not sure how long its been dow.
besides it is EMD , aged, keyword earn online are in title, domain, description and 40X in the homepage plus many variations and long tail keywords.
In general I agree that many changes G is coming out with are less than optimal or logical and might seem chaotic. The results relevancy and overall their core business has suffered, irregardless of "great" Q1 profits, which came mostly from luring in small business into adwords. There motto "Be No Evil" lost legitimacy long time. Not to forget unfair advantage and anti-trust laws pushing their own shitty services before others.

When checking rankings always start private browsing. Never use chrome. Even ip is very effective at ranking checking and you are checking with logged in

Google are shooting themselves in the foot. I typed in the name of a long standing CB product that has had thousands of review sites, pages etc built on it and number 3 on Googles SERPs was a spammy pin from Pinterest that had one sentence and a tiny picture of the product.
Way to go Google. Its looking like 1999 again.
And as someone else previously mentioned, lots of the sites who have received a penalty deserved their rank because they had excellent content. Penalizing them because of an "unnatural backlink profile" is out-and-out ridiculous. My main site is number one for a medium competitive keyword (as it should be because there is no other site that covers the topic in depth) but I only add content to it a couple of times a week because the rest of the time I have to build effing backlinks for it to stay there. I would much rather spend the time adding useful content but I cannot. The truth is other websites just don't link to your content willy-nilly in a lot of niches. I doubt most of the readers in my niche even have websites, and it isn't a topic they want to 'like' because its a bit personal.
Why would a competitor in my niche want to give me a free backlink? It is about time Google stopped this idiocy.
