Since no one has written in this thread for 6 months and Google just dropped a bomb
on Places and is moving it over to Google+, I thought I'd update the thread myself:
It's time to get busy and get marketing on Google+
As you probably know, Google made a huge change to Google Places on May 30, 2012
Here's the announcement from Google:

Here's the story, and my notes from a webinar training I attended are below:

From above article:
Google Places pages have been entirely replaced by new Google+ Local pages. As of this morning roughly 80 million
Google Place pages worldwide have been automatically converted into 80 million Google+ Local pages, according to Google's
Marissa Mayer. It's a dramatic change (for the better) though it will undoubtedly disorient some users and business owners..
Google+ Local Pages Will Be Indexed!
The conversion of Places pages to Google+ Local pages is taking place regardless of whether Places pages were claimed by
business owners or not. However nothing on the back end will change immediately for merchants. Google says this in its Google and Your Business post:
If you are a business owner, you should continue to manage your information in Google Places for Business.
You'll still be able to verify your basic listing data, make updates, and respond to reviews. For those who use AdWords Express,
your ads will operate as normal as they'll automatically redirect people to the destination you selected, or your current listing.
Despite this temporary calm, business owners are effectively being dropped into the social fray with more customer-interaction
potential but also greater demands to learn how to use Google+ to their full advantage. Those who do will be rewarded.
There's a ton of SEO potential here. Most notably, unlike Google Places pages, these new Google+ Local pages will be indexed.
Business owners will probably have a somewhat more difficult transition than consumers, as they're compelled now
to pay attention to Google+ — in a big way. They now ignore Google+ at their own peril.

My Webinar notes from May 30:
Google Places is moving to Google+ Local Business Pages but Google hasn't said yet how to or what to do next if you own a Places page.
Going to have to train your users how to use Google+ to leave you a review. They will have to have a Google+ account.
Google is trying to force usership of their Google+ system by making business owners teach their customers how to use it and to open an account.
You/they will have to create a full-blown Google+ account!!!
You HAVE to open a Google+ account and claim your business listing there. (I'm not sure how to do this second part yet).
You can have a personal Google+ page and many multiple business pages on that page. Someone has to be in charge of your google+ account.
DO NOT +1 YOUR OWN GOOGLE+ PAGE OR PROFILE. GOOGLE WILL CROSS-CHECK EVERYTHING ON YOUR GOOGLE+ AND PLACES ACCOUNTS
AND EVERYTHING ELSE THEY CAN FIND OUT ABOUT YOU. You could be banned from Google+ for doing this.
All the reviews on your Places pages are going to have to be redone by the original reviewer by them opening up a Google+ account.
These Reviews WILL NOT be transferred to your Google+ page.
You can become a Google+ Super-Reviewer by leaving a lot of reviews. Google will assign you a super-reviewer status and your reviews will rank in google.
You have to do a lot of reviews in your local area. It will help a lot if you get a lot of people to rate your review by giving your review a thumbs-up rating.
Google+ Local pages will be indexed and ranked in the search results. The stronger your profile is, the better it will rank.
You can and should SEO your Google+ page. But don't over-optimize them.
How do you get customers to open a Google+ account and leave you a review?
This is the BIG questions. Your customers will have to open a Google+ account to leave you a review.
You have to incentivize them some way by offering them something in return for their Review.
Ideas: enter them in a contest; offer them a discount on a service or product; offer them a "Rewards" card that builds credit towards a future purchase.
You can now leave a review as a business on another businesses review page. The icon for your business will be a link to your business page so people can get to your business page and you'll get a backlink (maybe).
Ask them to leave reviews on your Yellow Pages and Yelp, etc. pages. Get them on your email list and tell them about your Google+ page and show them step-by-step, how to join google+ and leave a review there.
Google is rewarding influencers so get social and share stuff, like stuff, share great content
You can tie a bunch of business pages together through just 1 business account.
You can now leave pictures on other businesses Google+ Local pages.
This is going to open up a huge need for Reputation Management Specialists.

How to use Google+ to sell your prospects?
Offer to set up Google+ pages for new or existing clients for free. Then ask them if they know anyone else who may want one or some SEO or backlinks or social media marketing or website traffic or SEO articles or SEO copywriting.
